???Hi to all I have just installed pclinuxos 2010.7 on my hp slimline s5229uk.I downloaded the gnome version as I like the layout better.Everything apart from the sound works well.Coming from windows recently my terminal knowledge is at a very non advanced stage (copy and paste mostly).I have searched the forum and seen various topics about sound. My sound card shows as a realtek alc 888s or nvidia hda snd.I can find some of the things mentioned in other posts but instead of kmixer I have gmixer.
Could someone please tell me which command to use to see the sound configuration in the terminal? Also I have tried to change the device in gmixer from alsa to oss and also in pcc.My knowledge is limited so I was also wondering if there was anyway to reset all my sound settings to default?this is because I ran a command in a terminal which was supposed to change the sound from ALSA to OSS.Figured I had nothing to lose as sound was not working at all.

Thanks in advance for any help  Smiley

Did you check that simple "mute" thing, to say in gmixer?
Does sound works in LiveCD session?

Additionally check in Gmixer > Edit > Preferences - that you have the correct "channel/track" enabled for your laptop.

I don't use Gnome so don't really know my way around it.

Have a look in Control Centre > Hardware > Sound - and check out some of the options in there.

Thanks for your quick replies.I have been into gmixer to check that there are no muted settings and also into pcc to check sound configuration. Was wondering if anyone would know which device I should be using I have listed nvidia hda and realtek alc 888?Oh and also the sound never worked on the live cd but I had not really thought much about it as I had decided to install anyway.
Thanks very much anyway I will perservere and try to find a way to get some sound going Undecided

So may be it is a driver/kernel module problem I don't know much about.

May be Texstar itself would peek here?

As the system comes with a Realtek chip you could try that one first - if you don't get any joy you could try the nvidia one.

When you installed, did you open Synaptic and do full update?

Oh, and a big welcome to the forum - nice to have you with us.

A bit above my pay rate unforunately to know either way.Appreciate the help though.Happened upon this page relating to a similar problem
http://linuxgator.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=603
Having looked at the startup programs menu it looks like alsa is definetly not on the list. The link above mentions using the stop command on alsa and sound service and rebooting and re install alsa from synaptic package manager does anyone think it could hurt for me to try?
One other thing is the stop commands for sound and alsa I dont want to get them wrong.I think they are "stop-alsa" and "stop-sound service" does that look correct? The rest of the solution in the link I am confident enough to try.

Many thanks

Right these are the sound trouble shooting commands in the pcc sound section. So I thought I would post them all up.I am wondering if I am correct in thinking that there is no driver selected? Also it appears that I am using the nvidia hd audio channel.Gmixer or alsaconfig will let me select an alternative "realtek alc 888s" but not with alsa out put.I also noticed in pcc that the panel that lets you pick your driver states that there is no known alsa-oss alternative driver for nvidia hda. This makes me think that the realtek needs to be selected and sound service and alsa stopped in the terminal. Then reinstall through synaptics as mentioned in the previous link.

Sorry about the hand holding here but I finally think I may be getting somewhere
Thanks in advance
