sudo make me a sandwich

« on: July 27, 2010, 02:35:40 AM »

Hey all,

I installed XBMC quite a while ago and have thus failed to get it run at all either from inside of KDE or directly from the login screen. When I run XBMC from bash, it outputs the result
Code:
[david@localhost ~]$ xbmc
socket(): Address family not supported by protocol
ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting

Code:
[david@localhost ~]$ xbmc-standalone
which: no pulse-session in (/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin/:/usr/games:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/lib/qt4/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/bin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/home/david/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/bin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin)
socket(): Address family not supported by protocol
ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting

Attempts to reinstall xbmc have not worked either
Code:
[david@localhost ~]$ sudo apt-get install xbmc

I wish I could offer something substantive... Undecided

I've had my issues with XBMC in the past, on PCLOS...but they seem to be well resolved, now.  I just tested it again, in KDE (in case there was an issue with any recent updates), and it working OK.  Are you sure your system is fully updated?  I see your using sudo...you configured this yourself?  Are there any other possible modifications you've made (whether or not you think they may impact this issue directly, it may help in troubleshooting)?
Have you tried updating and installing using Synaptic, instead of apt-get (even though I use apt-get, on occasion, when working with remote systems)...
You may have a configuration issue in your account, also.  Have you tried creating a new user, and logging fresh and trying again (I like to have a user call xbmc, which my kids know the password to, which has a session type of xbmc, so they can watch movies, etc without impacting other areas of the PC).
Can't think of anything else to suggest (other than trying a new install, updated and only xbmc added, and test that...but I consider that pretty extreme)
If I think of anything else, I'll post it...

Thank you for your response. Its okay to grasp at straws since I really don't have anywhere to begin as far as this problem is concerned.

Yes, I have tried other methods. I simply use that method out of convenience because CLI is much faster for me. Haven't had any problems with other packages yet, adding, removing and upgrading.

I have tried using xbmc as another user, but to no avail. I'll try looking for configurations related to xbmc and delete them in hopes that xbmc will auto regenerate its configs. As well, i'll try to find a way to regress my xbmc package and see if that solves anything. If that doesn't work i'll compile the thing to RPM.

If anyone can come up with more suggestions in the meantime, I would be grateful.

Could you post your specs, also?

Maybe there is a driver issue.  I'm using Intel i945 video on a Core2Duo laptop (Dell D520), without issue.

HP DV5 (laptop)
Intel Centrino 2 Processor
GeForce 9200M GS/PCI/SSE2
HDA Intel Sound (STAC92XX)
4GB DDR2 RAM

The video is being output to an external monitor (1920x1080) through HDMI and the internal monitor is disabled.

Nice laptop...
Searching for xbmc and nvida on the forums (I seem to recall there were some issues with nVidia and ATi with xbmc when going through the last round of major upgrades), a couple hits indicate there may be some issues:

(Boxee is based on XBMC...)

What driver is being used for your video?

I'm using the stock proprietary NVidia driver. However thank you for those links, it appears to be a common problem with the driver after all. I'll do some research into xorg.conf hacks and see if there's any workarounds to the problem.

Hi All,

My first post and its related to this topic.  I run XBMC successfully on an old Dell but I've just installed it on a new Acer Revo 3700 and when I try to run it nothing happens.  The only change to the Revo was that I replaced Linpus with PClinuxOX and possibly lost the NVDIA drivers in the process?

So was a solution to this problem found?

Any suggestions most welcome.

Regards

That easy eh?, I think even I can manage that  Wink Wink

Result.....

[dc@localhost ~]$ xbmc
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/dc/.smb/smb.conf":
        No such file or directory
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/home/dc/.smb/smb.conf.append":
        No such file or directory
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

ERROR: Unable to create application. Exiting
[dc@localhost ~]$

No mention of NVIDIA unless that's in the  PulseAudio error.

[root@localhost ~]# mv /usr/lib/libGL.so* /opt
[root@localhost ~]# ldconfig

Did this also and it's working on my system but using ALSA  as default sound system.
