What's the simplest way for me to convert my kids VHS tapes to digital format on computer using a Hauppage WinTV - USB external.

Hello,
I think you need VLC.Capturing and digitizing analogue video from vcr via the yellow video in of a Hauppage  WinTV is quite straight forward once you get to grips with capture and rendering to the digital format you require. There are other applications for video capture and rendering to digital format but grasping that VCR's output analogue signals is the biggest obstacle to overcome.Rendering a captured image to the required digital format is possible with a number of programs besides VLC. Expect high processor use and long time periods depending on the specification of your computer.

If you find a sure fire way please let me know, seriously. This has frustrated me for over a year. I have so far purchased 5 usb capture devices and none of them work on this distro !!. I have made package requests for the drivers (usbvision) to no avail. I can capture composite video with no sound from a vcr using an old BT878 PCI card using VLC but the output is HUGE at about a half a gig per minute of video with no amount of tweaking making any difference..

Good luck in your quest..

aha, it seems my streak continues of questions that defy simple answers, such is my lot.

I am able to get the 'stream' to capture the audio in VLC but the video is garbled.

You could look into this:

I haven't tested this yet, but feel free to do so.  If you make any modifications, please post them back so I can look into incorporating them.  Thanks.
