Dear friends,

I have a strange problem. Whenever I switch on my computer 'Grub Loading Error-17' comes. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del Grub loads without any problem. This error comes only when I switch on my computer not during rebooting. This is 100% reproducible in my computer. I am using this configuration for the last 6 months. But the problem started last week only. I have not changed any hardware in the last 2 weeks.
Please somebody tell what could be the problem?

My computer details
Intel 945GNT motherboard + Intel Dual Core
Seagate 500GB SATA + 600GB WD external USB HDD

Thanks

Which PCLinuxOS version are you booting, and which filesystem is used to format the / partition?

I used PCLinuxOS 2010.1 CD and I am up to date. My root file system is ext4.

As I mentioned earlier, this happens only when I switch on the computer. I am able to boot using the same grub by three finger exercise or by pressing the reset button.

ravi_npatty,
Have you modified your motherboard BIOS settings in the last couple of weeks?  I'm just guessing that with a large number of devices and limited grunt in the power supply the HDD's may not be spinning up in time for GRUB.  If your BIOS allows - try setting HDD start delay +5 seconds.....

Good point _steve.

This could be checked if OP enters for a while in BIOS conf. (just for giving a time for HD to speed up) and then goes back.

_steve,
I think your suggestion can help me. I will try and update about the result.

It is very strange. I set up 5 sec delay for hard disc in BIOS. But the problem still persists. So I switched off the pc and switched on and directly went to bios setup screen and stayed there for about 20-30 sec. I think that should be more than enough for spinning up the HDD. Even that didn't help.

Only three finger exercise or reset button makes the grub working, not the power on switch.

Try turning off the external WD HDD before boot and start it after PCLOS.

I think that will give me problem since I am mounting that external hard disc using fstab. Still I will try this and update the result.

My CPU temperature is showing 72 deg. C. I dont know whether it is normal. Or can this be a reason for my problem?

This indeed stopped the error. But I was using this external hard disc always connected for months and there was no problem. After _steve's suggestion it strike me that I left USB boot enabled (I think after enabling USB boot only the problem started). Now I have disabled boot from usb devices and removable disks. Now error-17 does not come even if I leave external HDD connected.

Thanks _steve and all for giving kind support.

Congratulations regarding the boot issue solved.
Now about your CPU temp...do you have aircon?  Where are you located roughly - I'm guessing Mumbai Calcutta?  Then your outside ambient today peaks at 30 deg C   34 deg C?
It might be a good idea to check the CPU heatsink and fans - clean dust etc if clogged else consider an extra case fan!   A dual core CPU normally runs at under 50 deg C in my experience.

My computer was running noisy. I cleaned the CPU fan area and the noise is reduced, but the temperature is still same (72-75)

It shows three temperatures
Processor temp 72 to 75
Internal temp    47 to 49
external temp    43 to 46

I dont know what is internal and external temperature. All three are shown under CPU temperature.
