I have a western digital Passport USB HD that works quite well with PCLinuxOS.Only thingis, I can't change any icons. I want to change the color of a folder from blue to green and it won't let me do it.  It says I have insufficient permissions.

Use a yellow magic marker over the blue icons on your screen.  Wink

That's a joke,, sorry.  No help from me except to try it as root maybe?

See who has Ownership..
Open Dolphin (or equivalent) and navigate to /media/disk or wherever the drive is mounted. Right click and choose 'Properties'. Then click the tab 'Permissions'. At the bottom where it says 'Ownership' who does it say for User: and Group:?

If it is you for 'User' and root for 'Group' then check if you can add a dot file to change the color of the folder manually..
Go into the folder you want to change the color and right click.
Create New -> Text File...
Name the file .directory

Open the new .directory file with KWrite and add:
[Desktop Entry]
Icon=folder-green

(Close KWrite and 'Save')

yes, permissions are as you stated.

I created the .directory and that file is green.the folder that contains it is stil unchanged.It's a questonmark. I every other linux distro, it ws green.  There alredy ws a .directory inthat flder from using with  previous linux distro.   I edited specifically to your directions.

Maybe I should jsut delete it and create anew file?

EDIT -- in trying to now edit that file, I get the following message:

Quote
The desktop entry file /media/My Passport/MSMoney/.directory has no Type=... entry.

EDIT EDIT -- I closed the HD and re-opened and the fler in queston is now green!:) Yippee!:)

Thanks!:)

However, I can't edit that .directory file. Still getting that error mesage.

The way I do it, is that I first create a folder. I name it PCLOS tips&tricks.
Then whenever I see something that I need to remember, I copy and paste the info into Abiword, or whatever word processor you use, then save it in the PCLOS tips&tricks folder, naming it whatever the advise pertained to.
