Is there a way to upgrade to 2010.07 using apt or it requires fresh install?

If you have PCLinuxOS 2010.01 KDE4 already installed, just fire up synaptic, hit reload, mark all upgrades, and then Apply. Just wait, sit back, and relax. After the update, that's the 2010.07 already. That is why I love this distro, the rolling distro concept.

I don't think i upgraded to 2010.1. So in this case can i go directly to 7 or i need to upgrade to 1 and then followed by 7.
Could you please tell if i need to add anything in sources.list?
Thanks.

this is a rolling distro, no middle steps, if you reload synaptic and apply all the updates you will get the latest possible version
if you have installed pclinux 2009 that is another story

Ok, i did update and reload but it gave me only a handful of pkgs to upgrade which made me wonder if something went wrong. Since i was under the impression it would update practically everything. Do you know how i can check if i already have 2010.1 or 2010.7. I'm running on 2010 and not 2009

Then click on Help -> About KDE. If the version shows KDE 4.4.5 then it should be 2010.07. In short, the update did its job.

if you are running pclinux 2010.1 and you have updated system you should have the most recent version of kde 4.4.5, firefox 3.6.6 and other popular apps
to know what version you have of kde, open kde control center, it is the icon with two tools on it, in the help/about kde you should see the version you have
in firefox/help/about mozilla firefox you will see the version you have
in no place you will find a report saying that you are running 2010.07
if that feature exist, i haven't seen it in 4 years using pclinux
about the amount of apps updated, depending on the repo used you can reload and get a partial list of updates, something i don't know how to avoid, afik can't be done, after you complete a update press reload again to verify
a very important element that is not updated automatically is the kernel, to know what version you have you can open konsole and write uname -a
this command will give you some details of the distro you are using including the version of the kernel
kernel is maybe the most important part of the os and it should not be changed unless you know what you are doing to undo the change

Hi Murali, If I understand correctly you did this: update reload mark all upgrades did you then: apply & synaptics downloaded your updates? Sorry if I misread your comment, but it wasn't clear if you completed the update. note: you can get a good batch of info if you start konqueror & enter- sysinfo:/ to the address bar. But no pclos version. But, I just happened on this--open firefox/help/about Firefox & there is a small scrollable section that indeed shows "PCLinuxOS/1.9.2.6-1pclos2010 (2010)"

I checked both KDE & FF and they are at 4.4.5 and 3.6.6 respectively. So i guess i already am at the latest update. The only problem is uname -a gave 2.6.32.11-pclos2.bfs and which is different from Kernel 2.6.33.5 as listed in the release note. And this new kernel version never showed up when i did dist-upgrade. Guess I'll go back to synaptic and explicitly install the kernel.
Thanks all for your help.

Yup - that's correct murali - your kernel isn't updated during "regular" Synaptic updates - you have to "manually" select it and install it that way. The normal advise is that if things are working well on your system that a kernel update isn't really required and is unnecessary (unless of course you want it and this IS Linux after all so freedon of choice etc etc ) One of the reasons for updating or changing kernels is when new hardware drivers are included in it, OR if you have 4GB of memory and you want PCLinuxOS to see/use it all then its advisable to install a kernel with the ,pae extension in its name.

Yes, true. But sometimes i prefer upgrading kernel if it can make my machine scream with speed and features specially on sound area. Try as i might I could never get skype working properly in PCLOS. Works fine sometimes, other times it just gives hissing and static noise and not much can be heard by both parties.

There doesn't seem to be a KDE Mini ISO available. Is one in the works? Anybody know?
I'll be getting a new machine and would like to install the latest Mini if possible. If that is not to be, I'll have to decide between just installing the full new KDE ISO or using the old Mini and doing a giant upgrade.

I think there is a pclinuxos-minime-2010.07.iso for download.
Have a look on
ftp.nluug.nl
Full address I think is:
ftp.nluug.nl/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview

Ooops, nevermind. I didn't scroll far enough down the download page. Mini .07 is right there. Can't wait to see it do its stuff when the new machine arrives.
