I just did a reinstall of 2010 and all was fine. I updated all packages with synaptic.
When I restarted the computer, there was a new log in screen. The small log in window has a clock and many choices to log in. I chose my name and used my password. That brings up a small terminal with:
"warning: couldn't find charset data for locale C; using ISO 8859-1"
From there I brought up firefox so I could send this message. There is no regular desktop menus available just the small terminal.
Should I reinstall or is there a fix?

Boot the livecd, log in as root and copy /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file to the same folder on your installed partition.

Phewww... thanks, Texstar! Finally convinced my wife to switch over to PCLOS, and what happens? Works like a charm now!

I followed the advice and I get the normal login screen, but not before getting the following error message:
"Logging in guest...
A critical error occurred. Please look at KDM's logfile(s) for more information or contact your system administrator.
OK"

Copied the /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file from the live disk. I can now log in, however before the log in screen comes up I get w window that says:
"Logging in guest A critical error occurred. Please look at KDM's logfile(s) for more information or contact your system administrator"
This is a minor nuisance. Sounds like something needs to be changed in the kdmrc file.
Thanks Texstar for the help. I hope the fresh reinstall will help with the trouble I was having with digikam. Will report findings in the software section.

I had the same problem as you described and edited the kdmrc file - down at the bottom it has AutoLoginUser=guest I changed guest to my username and rebooted solved the error. You should ask Tex if this is safe to do or if it's the right thing to do
hope it helps

Thanks yim for the info on changing the kdmrc file, I thought that would work.
In addition to changing the user name from guest to my log-in name, I also changed the auto log-in line from true to false. I don't like to use auto log in.
I will mark this one as solved.

Ditto that. Same problem with lots of energy expended. My machine is an HP Desktop a1520n(about 5 yrs. old). This is the first installation problem I have had with PClinuxos in at least five years. By the way, this was a clean install with new /home partition. I will attempt the solution in a few days after the fatigue factor fades.

Here is a question for you guys having problems. Have you been keeping up with the updates or just decided to do one big giant update? I find it odd this went through 3 stages of testing without issue not including the KDE 4.4.4 update and suddenly now a few are having a kdmrc problem. I guess I will go back and install 2010 original and do a giant update and see if I can make if fail.

The first time this happened to me was the very end of June with Pclinuxos 2010 on one of the standard upgrades. I had been doing upgrades at least once a week.

This is really weird. I have PCLinuxOS box installed on virtual machine which I use to do my remasters which I give to my friends. And since then, I had no problems with upgrades whatsoever. Its fully upgraded.

I had the same problem after a fresh install of 2010.1 and a massive (521 MB) upgrade.
Thanks Texstar for the kdmrc file copy suggestion. That fixed it.

This also happened to me today ( I hadn't done an update for about a month.) However, I was still able to login and get a terminal as root and found my original kdmrc file had been renamed kdmrc.rpmsave so I copied it:-
cp /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.rpmsave /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
Everything now back to normal - thanks
