I am running PCLinuxOS 2010 from an external drive through USB. The internal DVDRW plays movies and commercial music CD but I have .jpg photos and mp3 files archived on DVD and CD discs from which the files cannot be read. The file list will not display through Dolphin or Konqueror. Amarok will not open the mp3 music file list and Gimp will not open the photos file list.

These were archived using Nero software and win XP on another system and discs were all closed (finalized). The DVDRW drive and all discs work well on the other OS which is now dual booted with PCLinuxOS 2010.

Here is info which I assume from reading some other posts, may be helpful.

Any suggestions, pointers or help is appreciated.

What is the filesystem and version used on the media?

Likely UDF Ver 2.?        ?

Is there support for the version used, in Linux?

Thanks JohnBoy,

I don't know the file system.  How could I find it?  I used Nero 6.6, if that helps.

Thanks JohnBoy,

I don't know the file system.  How could I find it?  I used Nero 6.6, if that helps.

I am not the one who could say anything about such software unfortunately .....  I have no Win install.

Only reason I asked the question is that I recall some time ago that Win was using a newer UDF than Linux had available.

There is also the possibility that Nero has some special thing done to their disk when writing ........  although I would not expect that to prevent READing from the media.

Thinking about it, the UDF version might be mentioned in Nero someplace ...

regards.

Make sure you have

dvd+rw-tools
udftools

installed through Synaptic.

Nero do a Linux free trial .......  maybe that would work?

"Nero do a Linux free trial .......  maybe that would work?"

afik, no but i hope i'm wrong, nero is just a app, it doesn't add anything to the os or to the file explorer you use(nor the kernel and the udf)

it could be a mutisession disc or the known udf weird mode used on windows/nero

all you can do is open the disk in a virtual machine(if i remember well it works this way) or in windows and remember to avoid nero and other apps that forget that there is standards

Thanks to you guys.  T6 and JohnBoy.

Especially JohnBoy.  I had DVD tools installed but NOT udftools.  That solved the problem and I do appreciate your help.

How do I mark my post as "Solved" ?
