I am using KDE and I was wondering if I have to use emerald? Can I not just KDE control my windows? I like the way they look and I really liked the snap features. But I don't think KWIN composite is that great yet.... So is there a way to let KWIN control my window decoration but still have compiz?

emerald only has a effect when you use compiz fusion

afik you can't use emerald window decorations without compiz fusion runing first, you can have compiz and not use emerald

if you don't want to use emerald you can open conpiz fusion icon to change the window decoration or just disable compiz and use kde4 native effects(slow on my machine)

Installing the package fusion-icon and then running the command "fusion-icon -n", will let you change the window manager AND window decorator from the system tray (the -n switch will prevent fusion-icon from (re)starting compiz). However if you are using KWin as your window manager, I don't think you can use any other decorator than KWin's native decorator.
