I don't do Windows

i'm thinking about buying a Dell Optiplex P4, GX280 w / 40 Gb hard drive, 512 RAM "Video-On-Board: AGP Integrated" and 3 PCI slots for a friend whose computer i was unable to upgrade to our new, shiny, KDE 2010 (it was/is a PIII w/256 Mb purchased on credit from Telnor here in Mexico about 2 yrs ago).  i had placed PCL 2007 on it but the lease ran out and she wanted some more card games on it so, dumb fred decided that it would take PCL KDE 2010.  Ha, ha.  Wrong.  So now i've had to tell her i can't get here old system to work; it no longer has Win on it and i haven't been able to get OpenBox, LXDE or i don't know what else to load, much less to run.

I used to have a GX280. The maximum RAM it will hold is 2GB. You'd do well to put that much in. Using an AGP card, instead of shared video memory, will help a lot. The shared video memory will be subtracted from whatever RAM you have. If you can't find or afford RAM for it, PM me. I probably still have those sticks.

As for the other machine, I'm currently running PCLOS 2010 LXDE edition on a Dell Dimension 4100, with a PIII running at 800 mHz. The machine has as much RAM as it will hold, which is 512 MB. To get more performance, I put in an nVidia AGP card with 512 MB of video RAM. The LXDE desktop is very snappy, although IDE disk speeds are fairly slow.

I suggest you to download the PCLOS 2010 OpenBox ISO, at least installed it runs well with 256MB RAM. For booting from live-CD I don't know well, it will require patience indeed, but I can tell you that if you try KDE you can go on hollidays and come back that it will still be loading.
If you stick to 256MB, do like other users suggested and use PCLOS 2009 LXDE. You will only need some time to pull all the apps you need, as the iso is a bit basic. Remember that you can install other environments then, like E17, XFCE, and perhaps even try almighty KDE 3.5  Shocked

I've run PCLinuxOS2010 KDE LIVE on 512Meg HP Pavilion 1.8G Celeron. Seems OK.

There may be 512MBs of RAM installed .......  but you have on board video which will reduce that .......

I would suggest that KDE4 is not the install for that PC in its present hardware config.

If you have a separate video card it would improve things a great deal.

regards.

EDIT
Is there a possibility of upgrading the memory in the PIII ?

That model seems to use DDR2 RAM, which is good news since you can pick it up cheaply at your local computer store. I would recommend getting at least 1GB, or 2GB if you can afford it since 2 gigs will be notably faster. Don't mix it in with your old RAM unless they are the same type (ie: PC2700).

Depending on the form factor it could take up to 4GB of memory, and I'd just like to emphasize that it does NOT have an AGP slot - the GX280 had a PCI-E slot for video.

You might be confusing it with the GX270, which was a great machine and one of the last DDR1 workstations.  It also maxed out at either 2GB or 4GB of memory depending on form factor, but had an AGP slot for video.

Thanks. You're right. Actually, it was a GX260. Where's my memory? I think I left it with the RAM sticks.
