Yeah, yeah... I know, I'm a Luddite.  Not so much anymore, though.  I'm starting to get more comfortable with KDE4, and thought, after finding Ksnapshot, that I'd share some of my present desktops here.

They're not razzle-dazzle original art or anything (and no copyright or other infringement is intended), but they do show my love for a certain bygone sci-fi series.

Y'all Enjoy!

Desktop i

Desktop ii

Desktop iii

Desktop iv

Desktop v  (my hat's definitely off to Google for their awesome Teahouse theme)

and... Desktop vi is a totally black, blank screen for use at night.  That's all for now.  Do I love Firefly, or what?

Later, Y'all

As a fellow Sci-Fi lover, I've never seen Firefly.
I may have to look into it.
As far as KDE, I hear you. Coming from Gnome, it took me several tries to finally commit to the DE.

Use to keep going back after a few hours, but a few months ago I made the commitment to really give it a chance, and now I wont use anything else.
Once you get the hang of it, you'll really like it.

Very definitely!  It's kinda like, um, "rednecks in space" except that Joss Whedon brought a rare gift (and some excellent writers) to the show.  A pity it only lasted for about 11 episodes - Fox really screwed them over.  Do yourself a favor, though:  get and watch Firefly on DVD before seeing the movie, Serenity, so it will make more sense.  There's also a Serenity role-playing game if you indulge in that gentle pastime.

I've always been a KDE fan since about KDE 2.0, (and let's not get into why we think one might be better than the other, at least not here)

It really seemed to me, though, that with KDE4 the KDE team started to provide solutions to problems that didn't really exist (kinda like they were trying to keep up with the Gateses, or did that go the other way 'round?  ?Quien Sabe?).  KDE4 is nice and all, but it is a huge beast, and rather lumbersome compared to earlier incarnations.  Everything works a different way than earlier (when things just sorta worked), and it's been a bit of an adjustment.

I've even loaded LXDE as a "fall-back" position for when I want stuff to go faster (my system is a Dell Latitude D620 laptop - a dual core, but running at a comparatively torpid 1.83 GHz and with a measly 2 gigs of RAM (heh).  With a 7200 RPM drive, this system performed a lot better (I've got an older, bigger drive in the bay right now so I can get things done without so much swapping out to DVD+R)

As I said earlier, though, I'm finally starting to get used to this new KDE (even though I miss the old one sometimes even still).

Anyhoo...

I didn't mean for this to become a rant.  Definitely check out Firefly - I think you'll really enjoy it.

Rudge, you are so right on the button.  The girl in the shuttle..........(back to reality)

I always wanted to see a bit more happening between her and the captain.

I am still po'd that there weren't more seasons of it.  I have the one and only season, pilot, and closing movie.  Have watched them all at least four times.

Networks do not always have brains.  Only one season of Firefly, yet how many of Rosanne...?

Personally, I found all the ladies in the main cast (the "crew") to be quite desirable creatures - Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, and Summer Glau all have their good points.  And let's not forget Serenity... she's a lady, too.

@T6 - I'm glad to see you were just teasing.  When I read your first post, I thought for a moment you might need to be reminded of a quote from "Principia Discordia":  "This book is a mirror - when a monkey looks in, no disciple looks out."  I'm happy to see that was not the case.  (You know what rabid, flaming idiots fans can be when they feel provoked... Wink)

Thanks for all the feedback on my desktops, gang.  Anyone wanting to talk Firefly is welcome to get with me by PM or, shoot, just do it here as long as the mods don't mind.

Next Saturday I'm refereeing my first session of Serenity: RPG with my gaming group.  It'll make a nice change from Traveller or Hackmaster and give our usual GM a chance to play instead of refereeing.

Talk at y'all...

horusfalcon,

Here's another for you ... it's sized at 1024 x 768, but I have it displayed on my 1280 x 800 display (stretched) and it still looks great.

Enjoy!

@horusfalcon: I see you're using Transmission (QT ?) instead of KTorrent, may I know why ? (default settings in Transmission make my Internet browsing impossible !)

Hi, Everyone!

Wow, a lot's been happening since I went on a 4/10 schedule at night.  I'm sorry to be so late answering all the questions.  Let's take 'em in reverse order...

From GoustiFruit:

I've been having a problem with Ktorrent shutting down at random intervals - I'm serious about reliability in a torrent client.  Transmission has been much more stable, and, once I set the bandwidth limits properly, it has been very well-behaved.  Default settings leave all your speed and connection settings maxed out for better throughput, but most folks' providers will traffic-shape (whether they admit it or not) so it's best to limit oneself to what one would already be limited by the shaper, anyway.  Less overhead that way, and things just work.  I use the scheduler to run at higher bandwidth at night.

And thank you very much for that lovely pic!  It has been added to my growing collection of starship art.

Hmm... let me duck out for a bit to make sure.

Most of these are either 1024 X 768 or 1280 X 960.  The images posted to the forum are reduced in resolution at TinyPic to a more reasonable size.  If you want some of these, shoot me a PM and I'll email you the full-size images in a zip or something.  (I have to confess that I don't remember where I got them.  I've finally gotten used to my new work shift, so I promise to check in more often.

Incidentally, I am displaying these pics using "Scaled and Cropped" as the display method.  This scales the image, but crops out the edges that overlap the screen area instead of "stretching" the image, so that it is displayed with correct aspect ratio.

Thanks for all the feedback about my humble desktops.  Here's hoping we will all get to keep flyin'.
