Can I have both kwin and compiz enabled at the same time or should I disable one to use the other?
Thought that using both windows managers would cause a conflict ,am I correct in this thinking?
If someone can set me straight on this it would be greatly appreciated.

As I understand it Kwin uses Xrender, and Compiz uses OpenGL. Under normal circumstances you would only be running one or the other because they affect the entire desktop when active. Personally I favor Compiz. Theres alot more to play with, and its a bit more mature in my opinion. Xrender I believe doesn't support the hardware acceleration under certain video cards (last I knew anyways) which can lead to undesirable performance in some cases. OpenGL runs well under most video cards with any decent 3d acceleration. So unless you have a specific need for kwin. I'd say just go with Compiz. If you have them both going at the same time, with productive results, I'd sure like to see how thats going. In theory I think something crazy would happen on a visual level. hehe.

Kwin can use OpenGL too Wink
Just if you use KDE Kwin is better...
BTW. Kwin will get better in KDE 4.5 Wink
I use only Kwin Smiley

I also only use the KDE4 - desktopeffects, and I don't miss Compiz (at the moment I see that as something for Gnome...  Cool )

Works well, many possibilities, and STABLE (I have had many problems with Compiz in the past...  Undecided - but yeah, that can be my fault... )

it depends on what you want to do and the hardware you have, in my case kwin is not a option for desktop effects, compiz is perfect here

i always have enabled compiz and rarely disable it to do a specific task that doesn't work properly with compiz enabled

"Thought that using both windows managers would cause a conflict ,am I correct in this thinking?"

when you select compiz and leave kde windows decorations you are just using that part but compiz is who is doing the process, kwin is disabled

afik you can't use both simultaneously, one disables the other, the same when you are on gnome and load compiz and disable metacity, the comiz fusion icon can let you load metacity when using kde4, you can have gnome decorations on kde4!

you can switch back to kwin or again to compiz but if you can work well with both is just a matter of decide which one you want to use and the benefits you find on each one
