PCLinuxOS - Heck Yeah !

« on: June 03, 2010, 08:45:49 AM »

This is all a bit complex to explain, please bare with me. I am using MiniMe 2010.

I firstly needed to "unpack" a .rar file I have download, I don't have a program to open a.rar file it seemed, so I searched the Forum for a solution,
 http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,73594.0.html
which it seemed very simple, to get Rarlinux installed through Synaptic.

I had trouble creating a document to paste the info into, I'm sure I used to just right mouse click the desktop and a menu appeared, I'd make a Kwrite text doc.
So I fiddled around with the "Folder view activity settings" from the Toolbox on the Desktop, I configured it to open the default Menu when Desktop "right clicked".
"Create New Text file" was the next thing I did, and pasted relevant info i.e., the URL of where I found info for Rarlinux, and that it could be found in the repository.
When I came to click on the Synaptic Icon on the Panel it seemed as normal, a new icon opened beside Synaptic, and wiggled about, but the popup for password to open Synaptic didn't happen. The new Icon just went away . itried 3 or 4 times . Obviously really confusing, plus scarey. I right clicked on the Synaptic Icon and opened "Icon Settings".
In an instant I've broken the settings, the Icon is a question mark ? By settings I mean, the Permission, etc. the icon is a question Mark, ugh !
I have no Icon in the Application Launcher Menu either for Synaptic.

Came back to the Forum and found info running a console, in root, and typing synaptic would run it, which it did.

As I said it seemed that Synaptic opened, after using command, I found Rarlinux, and installed it.

Nothing has happened I think, there is no menu item for Rarlinux, I don't know how to fix this, have the output from the console which may be of use to someone who has any idea what I've done wrong. I use PCLinuxOS regularly, but just through the GUI generally, and are totally bewildered how all this became so stuffed up !

I've replaced username with "me". Maybe should've Attached the KWrite document, sorry.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, ThankYou ... I'm very confused  Huh

PCLinuxOS - Heck Yeah !

« Reply #1 on: June 03, 2010, 09:07:46 AM »

This is the output in the console just now on starting Synaptic again, and reloading just to see that I can access Synaptic.

Rarlinux must be a commandline type program (?) as it's installed, but I don't know how to open the downloaded .rar files.

The panel icon for Synaptic is as I said a broken, although all other panel icons are o.k.
I have no idea why initially when I tried to use it, after configuring the desktop to open a menu through right clicking, that it failed to launch Synaptic ?  Cry

This is output from Konsole on launching Synaptic just now:

[me@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost me]# synaptic

(synaptic:5823): libglade-WARNING **: could not look up stock id 'Preferences'

(synaptic:5823): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET
(widget)' failed

(synaptic:5823): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_view_unref_tree_helper: assertion
`node != NULL' failed
[root@localhost me]#

As before I changed user to "me". Synaptic did launch, and I reloaded it. Once done this is what was in the Konsole.

Thankyou .

If memory serves you just need to open Dolphin (or Konqueror, etc) and right click on the file you want to "unrar" and thats it....

You could try reinstalling Synaptic.

Or you could right-click the icon and check the settings first. The Application tab should look like the first attached screenshot. (The command can be either "/usr/bin/synaptic" or just "synaptic".) And if you click "Advanced Options", you should get a dialogue that looks like my second screenshot.

If Synaptic starts I'd ignore these warnings. (I get the first two if I start Synaptic from a terminal and nevertheless it runs well. The third warning I haven't seen before.)

If, after following blackbirds sound advice you still haven't got your icon back you can right click the main KMenu (PC) and select Menu Editor  then choose Edit and select the "Restore To System Menu" and that will bring back the default icons

Thankyou blackbird, and menotu .
I love my PCLOS, it's very upsetting when she breaks.

@blackbird, thankyou Sir, the pics were same as mine, anyhoo, ... followed menotu's instructions and have a ICON within the Application Launcher Menu. However the Synaptic ICON in the PANEL has dissapeared.

O.k. so right clicking the restored Icon in the Application Launcher Menu there's an option to "Add to Panel".

So all fixed !!! Super cool thanks guy's !!!  Grin

Few questions, or where to/how to find what something is:
Application Launcher Menu / Software Center > Dupeclean-gui ( What the heck is that ? )
Repository Speed test ?
Synaptic package manager ( I Know what this one is  Wink )

blackbird:

You could try reinstalling Synaptic.
That is an option ? I hate to ask how I'd go about doing such a thig, but if it isn't too big a task the information would be invaluable, finding where such information is hiding would be even better ... the reason I say "Where", as the PCLinuxOS operating system evolves I come across a lot of dead information, stuff which has been superseded over the years.

Whatever, once again thankyou very, very much to you both for your help, I've learnt some very handy info.

Dupeclean-gui is a graphical interface to Dupeclean, which searches for duplicate versions of installed RPMs and removes all but the newest one. Sometimes useful when Synaptic complains about more than one version of the same package being installed.

The Repository Speed test helps you find the repository mirror with the fastest download speed at your location.

You could do it from the command line. As root:
Code:
apt-get --reinstall install synaptic

And I've actually reinstalled Synaptic from within Synaptic. The sky didn't fall.

For info about apt-get, try man:apt-get in Konqueror/Dolphin, or man apt-get in a terminal. (You may have to reinstall apt first: to save space most man pages have been removed from the live CDs.)

Thanks for that blackbird, I'll have to check whether I have those man thingo's. I have looked at Konqueror HELP, and it says some data base is missing, but I'll nut it out.

Again thanks for your support,
Cheers  Wink
