there is many ways, the usual is install a app that uses 3d and see how it responds
you can install google earth for example, other games in repos could let you test system too
you can enable compiz or kde desktop effects
the command glxinfo and glxgears in konsole will give you tons of info
glxinfo, on one of the lines should say direct rendering:yes
on glxgears you should have at least 700 fps when running the app without resizing it

Open a Konsole/Terminal and type
glxinfo |grep "direct rendering"
this will give you a definitive yes or no
