Dear friends,
Update:First of all a big THANK YOU to all providing feedback and very special thanks to tame, travisn000, and YouCanToo!
The final KDE Fullmonty (FM) edition 2010.07 is now available from
pclosusers or my (potentially fast but sometimes also unreliable

)
ftp-server.
Size: ~ 4.0 GB, md5sum: 14629f7c84ad9553799b928a7db172e3
List of installed packagesImportant notes: 1) if possible please use a download manager with multi-thread and resume capability like prozilla, multiget, or filezilla.
2) the virtual desktop layout of FM-2010.07 has been completely reworked, it is not compatible with FM-beta1, and there is no way to update FM-beta1 to FM-2010.07. If you use FM-beta1, erase it and install a fresh copy of FM-2010.07.
3)
Users with NVidia cards: the liveDVD should now properly load the Nvidia driver. If you are still dropped to a cmd-line, please login as
guest with password
guest and then enter:
startx.
4) Depending on your audio-card you may need to: right-click the speaker-icon in the panel, Select Master Channel..., and set it to PCM instead of Master, and also increase the volume of that channel.
What is KDE-fullmonty?
=====================
FM applies a new concept: activity-focused virtual desktop layout, which is designed to address typical user-needs/tasks, make their life easy, and working on the computer straightforward and fun. So, what does the typical user do with a computer?
1) check email/internet/chat/IM? Goto desktop 1 and you find all you need directly on the desktop.
2) office work to do? Goto desktop 2 where you will find OO, kile, scribus, etc...
3) want to play a quick game? Goto desktop 3 and relax with a quick game
4) listen to or convert music, watch/make DVDs, etc? Goto desktop 4 for any multimedia task
5) working with images/photos? Goto desktop 5 to scan, post-process, draw, etc.
6) system info/administration/configuration? All on desktop 6.
Just click the desktop for your activity and start working in a dedicated environment....
The idea of the FM concept is to provide the best out-of-the-box experience in an intuitive, thematically organized desktop setup. FM is designed for Linux beginners and newcomers from other operating system, while Linux geeks may find this edition bloated. The typical user is provided with a cream of the crop selection of activity-related applications available in PCLinuxOS. The most popular ones are easily accessible from the respective virtual desktop and many more applications can be accessed from the PCmenu. The variety of applications in FM serves several purposes: advertising these great applications to the users; stimulate the comparative usage of these applications in the forum, learning about and discussing specific application features, and finally helping deciding on and providing constructive feedback on finding the most popular application for a given task. FM should facilitate the entry into the Linux desktop experience, provide an intuitive and easy to use working environment, and ultimately promote the best Linux distribution to the first place of the charts!

Remarks:
==============
1) The desktop layout with the plasma-widgets is designed for a screen resolution of 1024x768. For a different screen-resolution and upon first login to a user-account, the widgets positions are automatically remapped to the actual screen resolution. You should get a respective message and the plasma-desktop is then re-started to have the widgets positioned properly on your desktop. This step will only happen once. In case you change the screen-resolution afterwards you can click on
Fullmonty Widgets Setup in the upper right of desktop 6 (or
PCmenu -> More Applications -> Configuration -> Fullmonty Widgets Setup) to re-map the widget layout to the new screen-resolution.
2) the script
fm_switcher (or
PCmenu -> More Applications -> Configuration -> Fullmonty/Default Layout Switcher) allows to switch between the fullmonty and the default KDE4 layout for any new user setup after running this script. With this script you could setup some users to have the fullmonty layout and some other users to have the default layout, all on the same system.
3)
Important: during HD-installation you
must choose "custom disk partitioning" and create a (/)-partition of at least 15 GB
and a Swap partition of at least 1 GB or 2GB.
4) by default, the FM-layout is only applied to the non-root accounts.
5) libdvdcss2 and w32codecs are not included but can be easily added later by installing
task-multimedia6) users with 3D graphic cards (NVidia, ATI) should note the following:
a) by default, desktop effects are disabled, you can enable them in
PCmenu -> More Applications -> Configuration -> Configure Your Desktop -> Look & Feel -> Desktop Effects.
b) open Synaptic and uninstall
googleearth-nongl, otherwise you will only get a black screen in GoogleEarth
have fun!
