X window will not load

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 and I recently installed PC Linux on it. It would crash with only a white cursor in the upper left corner of the screen, but other than that it worked fine. It has an 82845G Graphics card, and I performed the suggested fix of installing the latest kernel. I eventually ran into the same problem again, so I tried disabling advanced options such as hardware acceleration, compiz, and mouse acceleration. It would then no longer boot beyond the splash screen. I used safe mode to change it to run level three. I can not find the configuration file for x window, but I did figure out how to install Lynx and links web browsers. Would you recommend simply reinstalling PC Linux?
Thank you for your time.

Yes. I still have crashes but updating the Kernel to 2.6.33.4 reduced them quite a bit. I tried the fix listed in this post but it hasn't prevented crashes.

Well I hate to tell you this but in that dell 2400 has some major graphics card driver issues with most of the Linux variety distros. I had the same problem with my dads Dell 2400 trying to run Pclinuxos. So I switched his to Mandriva and it runs just fine. I have no idea what the difference is between the two distro's when it comes to the video drivers.
