I removed 'noblank.sh' as per your post. Then I rebooted, started up Firefox and went to start up Synaptic but Synaptic would not start. I got the 'Run as root' dialog typed in my password and then nothing. Waited and tried again a few more times and still nothing. So I opened up Konsole as root and typed 'Synaptic' only to get this..
Code:
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
So I restored 'noblank.sh' and rebooted. Then Synaptic started up normally with no problems. Now I'm just glad I moved 'noblank.sh' to the trash and didn't delete it.

Hmmm...not sure why the file would create magic-cookie issues Huh

Looked at the contents of noblank.sh...
Code:
#!/bin/sh
xset s off
xset -dpms

Looks pretty un-complicated...

Looked at the options available for xset:
Code:
[jpaglia@core2pclinux ~]$ xset --help
xset:  unknown option --help

usage:  xset [-display host:dpy] option ...
    To turn bell off:
        -b                b off               b 0
To set bell volume, pitch and duration:
b [vol [pitch [dur]]]          b on
    To disable bug compatibility mode:
        -bc
    To enable bug compatibility mode:
        bc
    To turn keyclick off:
        -c                c off               c 0
    To set keyclick volume:
         c [0-100]        c on
To control Energy Star (DPMS) features:
        -dpms      Energy Star features off
        +dpms      Energy Star features on
         dpms [standby [suspend [off]]]
              force standby
              force suspend
              force off
              force on
              (also implicitly enables DPMS features)
a timeout value of zero disables the mode
    To control font cache:
         fc [hi-mark [low-mark [balance]]]
both mark values spcecified in KB
balance value spcecified in percent (10 - 90)
    Show font cache statistics:
         fc s
    To control Xprint features:
rehashprinterlist      Recomputes the list of available printers
    To set the font path:
         fp= path[,path...]
To restore the default font path:
         fp default
To have the server reread font databases:
         fp rehash
To remove elements from font path:
        -fp path[,path...]  fp- path[,path...]
To prepend or append elements to font path:
        +fp path[,path...]  fp+ path[,path...]
To set LED states off or on:
        -led [1-32]         led off
         led [1-32]         led on
        -led named 'name'   led off
         led named 'name'   led on
To set mouse acceleration and threshold:
         m [acc_mult[/acc_div] [thr]]    m default
    To set pixel colors:
         p pixel_value color_name
To turn auto-repeat off or on:
        -r [keycode]        r off
         r [keycode]        r on
         r rate [delay [rate]]
    For screen-saver control:
         s [timeout [cycle]]  s default    s on
         s blank              s noblank    s off
         s expose             s noexpose
         s activate           s reset
    For status information:  q

Looks a little complicated... Wink
I'm guessing it might be better to try modifications to the file (save backups, of course!) (these are un-tested and theoretical!  Attempt at your own risk, disclaimers, etc!)  Grin Grin

Change
Code:
xset s off
to one of these choices:
Code:
For screen-saver control:
         s [timeout [cycle]]  s default    s on
         s blank              s noblank    s off
         s expose             s noexpose
         s activate           s reset

And enable DPMS by changing:
Code:
xset -dpms
to something from here:
Code:
To control Energy Star (DPMS) features:
        -dpms      Energy Star features off
        +dpms      Energy Star features on
         dpms [standby [suspend [off]]]
              force standby
              force suspend
              force off
              force on
              (also implicitly enables DPMS features)
a timeout value of zero disables the mode

To anyone willing to test these out:
Have fun, and let us know how it goes!

I was reading this thread yesterday as I was looking for ideas as to why my install (2010) wouldn't kill the monitor power after a preset amount of time and didn't know if this thread to killing the display at a preset time versus after a preset time?

If it is after, i.e. 20 mins or so...I did find the problem appears to be resolved with the new KDE release.

Thanks!

I found this to be the easiest way to control the screen time
