I had a problem with the PCLOS_kde_2010 and my hp all in one printers.
I made an earlier post where I got around the issue of not being able to get the system to install these devices while connected to the network.
I got around the issue by first installing while connected via USB. This of course is less than optimum when your officejet is not in the same room.
I have since figured out how to install these while connected to the network. More importantly, for the CLI phobic among us, it can be done entirely in GUI.
I don't think it matters, but, the models that I have installed this way on my network are officejet 6310 and officejet 7310.
I would recommend doing this first from a livecd. It works fine and the printers work just fine. This way, if you screw up, you will not have modified your installed system. Once you have done it on the livecd and know that it works, then do it on your install.
Yes, I know, I tend to be overly cautious. But, this way, an absolute newby does not have to worry about making a mistake.
Ok, here we go.
First, connect the printer to the network and turn it on. Make certain that it has paper.
Boot your liveCD to the desktop as guest.
Find the PCC icon at the bottom of the screen. It is a crossed screwdriver and wrench.
Now go to PCC (enter root password when asked) > Hardware > Set up the printer(s),etc.
A small dialog box headed "Printerdrake" will come up. It contains the following text:
There are no printers found which are directly connected to your machine (make sure that all your printers are connected and turned on).
Do you want to enable printing on printers on the local network?
NOTE: Depending on the printer model and the printing system up to 80 MB of additional software will be installed.
Click on the box on the lower right which says "yes".
Now a box will come up headed "Local CUPS printing system or remote CUPS server?"
It contains the text:
The CUPS printing system can be used two ways:
1.The CUPS printing system can be run locally ...
2. All printing requests are immediately sent to a remote CUPS server...
Local CUPS printing system is preselected at the bottom.
Click on the box wich says "OK".
Now a box will come up headed "Starting the printing system ..." and text which says:
The printing system (CUPS) will not be started automatically when the machine is booted.
It is possible that the automatic starting was turned off by changing to a higher security level, because the printing is a potential point for attacks.
Do you want to have the automatic starting of the printing system turned on again?
Click the box which says "yes".
Now a window will come up that is headed: PCLinuxOS Printer Management Tool 2010 (Free)
Go to File > Quit and exit this window and then exit the PClinuxOS Control Center.
Now, go to PC > More Applications > Printing > HP Device Manager
It comes up with a window headed "Refreshing device list - HP Device Manager" with a dialog box over it that says "No installed HP Devices found".
Click on box "setup device ..." at bottom left.
Give the root password when asked.
It now comes up with a window labeled "HP Device Manager - Setup"
Click on the second item under Device Discovery. It starts with: "Network/Ethernet/wireless ..."
Hit "next".
It will come up with a screen showing devices found.
If only one was found, it will be selected and will be highlighted in blue. If more than one are shown, select the one that you want to install.
Click "next".
The system will go away and work for a while. Wait!
Eventually, it will come up with a window headed "HP Device Manager - setup" which shows the printer that is to be installed and allows you to enter a description and location for said printer if you so desire.
If it is an all-in-one with FAX, a check box in the center of the window is pre-checked to install the FAX function.
If, like me, you will never use it, uncheck it.
Check "send test page to printer".
Click "add printer" at the bottom of the page.
A window headed "HP Device Manager - HP Officejet 7300 series (printer) will come up that shows the printer selected in the left panel. Of course, it will actually be labeled with the name of your printer, not mine. It shows all the functions that are available for that printer in the main pane.
Also, since we selected "print a test page", a page should now be coming out of the printer.
That is it!
Your network scanner should now work also.
If not, go to PCC > Hardware > Set up scanner.
Now, if everything is working from this install using the liveCD, go ahead and do the same thing to install your printer in your actual installed version of PCLOS 2010.
In the future, if you want to install other HP printers on your network, just go to HP Device Manager and select Device > Setup Device.... and proceed as above.
