Camera connection in LXDE - I'm stuck!

Guys,

I am VERY new to all this, so thanks for your patience

I've installed LXDE on the parents computer since the old xp kept giving them virus/spam trouble.

They tried to connect a camera, and it wouldn't auto detect.  Everything else has been pretty smooth, including hooking up the printer, but I'm not sure what to do about the camera.

I know a last ditch solution could be to go buy a usb card reader, but I'd really like to figure this out.

I've heard that Thunar is something that can be configured to auto detect, but I have no idea what it is, or where it is (Synaptic says that I have it, but there is no File>Thunar)

I'm thinking to myself, what the heck am I supposed to do?  How do you get LXDE to auto-detect this stuff?   Any advice?

Also, I tried shutting the camera off, turning it back on, using different USB ports, etc. 

I am currently running the full LXDE 2010 final on this comp.  Would definitely appreciate any help, as this is their first experience with Linux, and they definitely need it to do everything they are used to with other OSs.

btw, the camera in question is a Canon Powershot A480.

Open PCManFM and plug in the camera. The camera should appear in the list of volumes on the left. It will be just under Desktop. Click on that entry to mount the camera.

When I use the cable that came with my Sony DSC-T20 camera, it shows up as a mass storage device.  And I have access to all my pictures.

Open pcmanfm, plug in the camera, and you should see it appear in the list on the left side.

I find Cheese, the app not the dairy product, picks up most webcams. If Cheese works then you know you webcam is OK and you just have a settings issue.

install  lxde-halevt-additions and you should get a pop up window that shows anything plugged in

Your noobness is entirely all right. The forum is here to help people.

Another thing you can do is use a little USB adapter for your camera;s memory card, and plug that in. You should at least be able to see it in the file browser.

having the same problem here with a friends lappy with  lxde..the exact same camera after installing lxde-halevt-additions it pops gtkam but crashes


edit: camera does not show in file browser..
