"All that is not given, is lost." Hasari Pal

« on: April 21, 2010, 09:01:12 PM »

I download the current version (KDE full).  Checksums are all OK.  Ran it as a Live CD, seem to be perky, so I thought I would install it to test on my hard disk.  I have a small disk 40 gig.  1/2 of that is devoted to a KDE 3.5 updated version and I use that everyday.  When LiveCD asked about hard disk partition I told it to take the other open 20 gig.  I didn't setup a seperate swap, or /home, just said use the rest (20 gig).  The install went well, and when I booted up I had the choice of 2010 or my older version 2009.  I enter into 2010 and went online.  Everytime I open a window, like opening package mananger, the window opens, and the mouse refuses to move, for about 3-5 minutes.  After that I can move the mouse, but if I choose to go down in a lengthy menu, when I move the bar down, the mouse again freezes for another 3-5 minutes.  It's almost as if the window manager cannot handle normal mouse movements, and I'm confused why the LiveCD would work well, and the installed version was so slow.  Figured you might like to know what hardware I have, and I should mention my 2009 is formatted to ext3, and I noticed the default for the 2010 is ext4, and yes, they are both formatted to that rule.  Here's a list of hardware from our sysinfo program.

I have a fallback DVD of my 2009, so if the general answer is wipe the disk and load fresh, I can do that to play with it again, and in worse case reload to my kde3.5 version.  Hope someone might have an idea why.  Thanks for reading, have a great day! Grin

what video card do you have?

it says that you have a rage 128, is that correct? a very old video card(consider a change?)

what drivers are you using, check it on pcc/hardware/setup the graphical server, it is possible that you need to load the driver without 3d support

are you using kde desktop effects or compiz? with that card is not a good idea to try any effects mentioned so disable them to discard them  Sad

if i understood properly, you have 768 mbs of ram(i 512 and 1 256 module) in a via chipset mainboard, enough to load and use kde4, ideally you should have 1 gb to work without problems but that amount should do it

your cpu is slow but should be enough to handle kde4

i see a partition mentioning 24 gbs, is that correct? you say that you allowed a partition of around 20gb or less and the swap is 1.2 gbs so those numbers doesn't match

Maybe you have some old junk in /home. Try creating a NEW user and log in as that user and see how it goes as a test.

I just agree that PCLOS2010 is painfully slow. Everything is 2 to 3 times slower than in PCLOS2009 and compared to WinXP it's a dinosaur...
Also, replies like "what videocard do you have" .. it is not really the issue...  I don't want to buy brand new hardware each time I update my OS. An ordinary PC with an ordinary setup should due. I can't even watch videos anymore. And I do have > 1k RAM and a

What is the actual reason to the slowness? I can accept that an OS developes and becone more secure and stable, but if it is just adding extras that slows the machine down, I can't see the point. Everyone who wants extra stuff could download it through synaptic..

Now, I have liked PCLOS very much, but now I can't use it.

So what can I do?

I've heard that the Gnome version is much faster? But how many of the softwares is dependent on KDE? I like KDE style, but maybe I have to learn to use Gnome instead?
Is there a special dist. for Gnome or Can I change that on my current installation (change KDE -> Gnome)? Are there other "faster" alternatives?

this post was dead and you are not giving useful information to fix the original problem

"I can't even watch videos anymore. And I do have > 1k RAM"

1 GB i hope you want to say because 1 kb of ram is kinda... well

"but maybe I have to learn to use Gnome instead? Is there a special dist. for Gnome or Can I change that on my current installation (change KDE -> Gnome)"

consider creating a post asking this questions, you are hijacking this post

T6:   Grin

yeshe:  Start a new thread.  If you want the kde toys/tools fine install it, then install task-xfce (shameless plug) and choose it at the login in screen in the sessions menu.  KDE tools with the fast Xfce desktop.  Hope it helps.

OldGuy:  Uh, no idea.  Sorry.  Do what Texstar said and see if it helps.

Keep in mind that KDE4 has higher system requirements then KDE3. Still, you have a 1GB swap partition and 768MB of usable RAM, so I don't think low RAM would entirely account for sluggishness of this magnitude, nor would a poor performing videocard (unless you have KDE4 compositing or Compiz enabled, both of which require a videocard with sufficient video RAM -- 16Meg VRAM on the Rage 128 would probably be insufficient to run even KDE4 compositing).

OldGuy
I just finished installing Phoenix in a Celeron 1.2 MHz  512 MB RAM  Nvidia MX 4000 64 MB video  and two HD (40 GB and 120 GB)  and it was slow but I changed the proprietary drivers to Xorg nv drivers and is fast and responsive.

Haven't installed KDE 4 but I think there are a lot of alternatives DE's before returning to KDE3 which is a dead end (I would like to do that but no more support is a no go for me)

Good luck  Smiley

KDE4 is a bit of a resource hog but Pclinuxos developers have covered practically every other Desktop Environment known to man. Surely, there is one that will fit you? If not, then its time to look at other distros. I suggest Puppy, Debian or Crunchbang Linux.

Personally, I'm running KDE4 and it runs sweet as a nut. But then, I am using modern hardware (quad core/2 gb/nvidia 8600GT). Thats the crux of the problem here. If you can't or won't upgrade your hardware then don't expect Linux development to hang around waiting for you to catch up.

Don't get me wrong. I love messing around with older gear and Linuxifying it, but I except that I will have to upgrade my main desktop from time to time if I want to keep up.
