"Well, I can't get it to work. Emerald Theme Manager opens, the theme is there, I highlight it and the app. closes. This makes Emerald Theme Manager unusable in this release."

first open fusiuon-icon on konsole or in kmenu/more apps//config/compiz fusion icon

that opens the basic menu near the clock on the taskbar, in there you can select the windows manager(the blue cube with a white arrow)

right click/select window decorator/compiz and in select window manager be sure to have selected compiz

if you select a theme with emerald this should be enable the selected theme to be used, or at least that is how i do it here

Ditto - that's precisely how I get mine up and running

I guess you can consider me a dolt, because I can't get any of the above to work. When I open Konsole and type in "fusion-icon", Konsole tells me "command not found." If I try to Use More Applications - Configuration - CompizConfig Settings Manager, I can't find a blue cube with a white arrow. And, then I'm stopped. Is this rocket science, or am I missing something obvious?

I'll reply to myself ... I finally figured out that you were suggesting that we install the Compiz Icon before trying any of your steps (it isn't installed by default) using Synaptic. Once I did that, it all became clear. So, I'm rescinding my dolt status  Roll Eyes

i wasn't suggesting anything

i was talking about the use of a certain app after it was installed

sometimes you consider some things as obvious but nothing is obvious this days, specially on linux where you can have a completely different installation depending on the iso you use to install

about this issue, be sure to open synaptic, press reload button and apply all updates

press the search button and write task-3ddesktop, install it

search compiz, if it is not preselected with the task package add fusion-icon, emerald and the extra plugins and install those too

Its been happening for a while now - at least 6 weeks - maybe more.

I have exported themes which I can fall back on but on some I have I've been editing me theme.ini file located in:

.emerald/thermes/name-of-theme/theme.ini

I was able to get emerald working by adding 'emerald --replace' to the autostart, and running 'emerald --replace &' in the Alt-f2 command entry box. it also helps to make sure you are running compiz instead of kde's default. All this with only whats in the repos. I switched to openGL, made sure Compiz was being used, installed Emerald, and ran the commands. All works perfectly.
