I started to have these issues, when I upgraded my 2009 install to KDE4.  At the time, though I thought that I would wait to see if they got resolved with the 2010 release but alias, the problem persists.

OMGRIP and BRASERO do not see my DVD drive.  Before the upgrade to KDE4, there was no problem so suspect that it may be an old config file lying around that uses the old cdrom name (if I recall, that changed when I upgraded to KDE4).  Anyway, my question is where would I find such a config file(s).  I've looked through the .gconf directory in /home but either I missed it or it wasn't apparent.

The other issue is with K3b.  If I do a "copy medium", there is no problem if the original is a single layer dvd.  I can read/play the DVD afterwards in both the Linux and Windows machines and the DVD player.  However, if the original is a dual layer DVD, I can neither read nor play the created DVD in either the Linux or Windows machines but can play the created DVD in the DVD player attached to the TV.  Is this too a config file issue?

Suggestion/comments welcome.

Did you do a fresh install of 2010? Is it gnome? (assuming it is since you're using brasero) Do you have libdvdcss2 and dvdread4 installed? If you answered
yes to all of the above, then it's beyond me.

Fresh install? I reformatted the "/" and swap partitions but the "/home" directory was not reformatted.  I am using the KDE version (not Gnome).  Dvdread4 is installed however libdvdccs2 is not - will install it and give it a shot.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Update - the addition of the additional app did not resolve the problem.  Brasero still does not think there is a DVD drive in the machine.

Don't know whether this will help you:

The brand of the DVD player in the machine is LG - unfortunately the model is not on the unit so don't have that information.  The machine was new this past summer so it should be one of their later model drives.  As for the question re mounting - not sure where to look for that information.  The drive is mounted at boot-up time so I didn't do any setup on the drive as it was performed during the OS install.  I can say, that the drive is recognized by K3b though.

CHeck in the Control Center under Hardware, and then check under Mount Points.

Thanks Xero - "Mount Points" doesn't seem to exist under the Hardware section any longer but I did find my drive under "Local Disks" and found the following:
Mount point: /media/cdrom
Device: sr0
Name: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20
Type: auto
Options: umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec

FYI ongoto - I did check the fstab as the first place to look but there is no entries in my fstab for the dvd player.

Have you tried creating a new (temporary) user to see if things wok from there?
If they do then it would appear to be something in the present user's home that is causing the problems.

Can you play the ISO of the dual layer copy in the present user account?

Tried the latest suggestions and here are the results:
Creating a new user - have the same result when using the new user account, i.e. the DVD reader is not recognized
Can I play the ISO - yes, single or dual layer playing of an ISO created DVD plays fine (mplayer and dragon both)
libburn - installed (libburn4)
libisofs - installed (libisofs6)
xfburn - installed
P.S.  The three modules above where all installed and system rebooted before testing with the new user account as well.

Well that indicates it is not anything in /home/user that is interfering.

Is this your only optical drive in the system?

There were a few of the LG models of drive that had problems in lots of OSs, but I don't know if your model was amongst them.

I suggest a search of the internet just to see if your model is mentioned as having specific problems. Some problems were solved, if memory serves me correctly, by a firmware update ....  but not having been hit with those problems my info is sparse.

regards.

If it works fine in k3b but not in brasero couldn't the problem be in brasero rather than the system?  Perhaps removing all of the brasero files from your
system and doing a fresh install would help.

One small detail i discoverd some months ago might be of interest. This laptop I am typing this from right no, the DVD drive cannot  read cd's, it chokes trying to, keeps trying and fails, and a friend of mine (who specialises in optical media) explained to me that most are unaware DVD optical drives have 2 lasers, one for cd, one for dvd, and the reason my cds were not reading was likely the cd laser was failing. Attempts to clan it made no diff, plus this revelation did explain a lot. It is always possible you maybe suffering from the same/opposite thing. Hardware issue. Just a thought.
