A week or two ago I saw a post by davecs explaining how to install beta2 onto an eeepc and the instructions included some specific guidelines for assuring that synaptic did not use the root hard drive due to space limitations.  I have been searching all morning and can not find this post.

Two questions:

1)  Do these instructions still apply with the final release?  (Yes, I do plan on using the 'full' install as I find the default packages very closely match what I install anyway)

2)  Where is that original post?   Undecided

TIA,

PCLinuxOS: A revolution in personal computing

I think this is the bit you need:

Quote
In order to create space to download rpms what I did was to open Konqueror Super User Mode, and do Window > Split View Left/Right. Set one window to /var/cache/apt  and the other to /home. Move the folder archives to /home. Now drag it back, but instead of copying or moving, do Link Here. All the downloads will go to the larger drive.

Despite doing this, when I tried to install OpenOffice, the GetOpenOffice program reported insufficient space. So I had to use Synaptic. You should find and select a repository with the following specs, if not, create one:

URI: http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/
Distribution: pclinuxos/2009
Section(s): openoffice

After the reload, you will need to install the "task-openoffice" for your locale. Then you can unselect that repo again.

I will get the full post here later. A problem has come up involving Mic sound in Skype.

What sort of problem?  At least when I make a test call the mic is recording.  What I would like to address is the gamma on the video.  It works, but it is dark.

Right. Can you tell me what the mic setting is in Skype? I take it you are using the internal mic. Also the KMix settings. I've tried to sort out my friend down the phone, she's coming to see me next weekend with the unit in order to try to fix the problem.

Clearly you don't have that problem with the mic in Skype, and I'm sure it was working OK when I set it up for her.

IMO, I think KDE doesn't fit on eee. But that's my opinion. I installed e17 and it's fast, very fast [2.6.33.2-pclos1.bfs]. No problems with Skype [static], too. Over & out.

I decided to give it a try to see how it works out and, so far, it seems to be fairly good, almost as quick as the 2009/XFCE install I was running and that is not too bad.  I really want to give the netbook interface a good try but after a few minutes of playing with it, I found that I need to do some reading on the details.  Looks like it could be a nice replacement for the Easy interface my eee came with originally.

The first thing I did was to set an option in the sound card module.  See the attached image for details.

I have also started to play with kmix settings.  What I have right now is attached.

edit: updated kmix settings screenshot.

You can also install the KDE version and then use task-e17 it will be fast and you will have the KDE apps, at least is what I'm doing in a nettop

on my eee900 kde4 with compiz and raster plugin flies - everthing works also.

The key to skype is tweaking the alosamixer settings from konsole.

Got to say that this is a much better system running installed than live.

Today i had boxee (windowed) chromium , opera , akregator ,and miro all open with no noticable slowdown.

PCLinuxOS: A revolution in personal computing

I can assure anyone that pclos2010 with KDE does fit on an eeepc900 and it runs well. Unfortunately I don't have access to one any more. Except that she will be visiting next weekend and I will apply some of the stuff here to ensure that everything works, including Skype.

I will then fetch my original article, written for the Beta Version, from the (now hidden except for Moderators) testing forum, and make any necessary amendments.

The main problem was to make space for the rpm files that are downloaded, and getting OpenOffice installed, which I did include at reply #1 in the present thread.

I have installed MiniMe 2010 in an Asus 900 16GB SSD 2GB Ram, and (almost) everything works fine. It is reasonable fast enough. I have Skype (after tweeking kmix too) and GoogleEarth working fine. I just have problems with Digikam and Amarok, that crashes soon after they are open. I haven't tried reinstalling yet.

Best.

2010 KDE4 Minime installed into the 8GB SSD module of my EeePC 701SD without any drivespace issues, and is operating quite well on that machine.  Installation of same into the EeePC 701 and 4G models, however, is proving to be considerably more problematic for me:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,71812.0.html

With those models, if one wishes to make use of the 4GB onboard SSD then the installation must be split between the internal SSD and the SDHC cardreader; otherwise, there'll be only 700MB of drivespace remaining, and for many common purposes that amount is insufficient.  In the past, I had placed /tmp /var and /home onto an 8GB SDHC card (for the Minime 08 install into my original 701); however, with experience gained I next adopted the practice of placing /usr and /home on the SDHC instead, and this worked out quite well for my Minime 09 installs.

With the advent of 2010 KDE4 Minime though, much has changed.  As I observed that this particular desktop environment causes inexplicable constant background disk write activity, I decided to avoid use of the 4GB internal SSD entirely and install the system completely onto an 8GB SDHC card instead (as a similar layout had already succeeded on my 701SD unit.).  Unfortunately however, as the above link now documents, all efforts in that direction have so far failed - thus causing me much grief and worry.
