I am trying 2010 e17 final, installed today. Seem to be some important problems with the file manager PCMan 0.5.2.
It works fine with icon view, but if I change to detailed list view I can open only the first level folders. If I try to open a second-level folder, nothing happens - it won't even highlight - zilch.
2. If I right click on any folder and choose properties, the file manager crashes, saying "no error message" so I can't change the properties, choose share or whatever. This happens in all views.
Just not usable.
Anyone else got this?
Is there another lightweight file manager I can use?
EDIT: trying Thunar which I found in the repos. Hope that is OK....
Cheers

Well arjay , I do not use PCMan, I have always used Thunar. From Synaptic install Thunar , Thunar archive plugin and Thunar thunmbailers , I've always worked with this file manager. To work in Root mode, simply open a terminal and type thunar. Greetings: Agust PS:Anyway I checked PCMan me and my work well.

I can reproduce the errors I described above every time. I am trying thunar and it seems ok but I cannot access my samba shares like i can in dolphin? I will google to see what I can do about this. Also, Mplayer crashes. Also I have no sound - I have checked all the usual problems but no sound. Also it does not auto-detect a music cd when I put it into a drive. Looks like too many problems for me. I also have 2010 kde on this PC and everything works fine out of the box. It is a bit slow (quite an old PC) so that is why I was trying e17. But it looks like I will have to try something else.

Well , for Thunar samba , install , Thunar-shares and Thunar-shares-plugin.
Actually - I did install these plugins but not sure how they are supposed to work. There is nothing in any of the thunar menus that suggests a samba plugin or options to browse samba shares. I have tried variations on smb://192.168.1.99 and smb://galaxy but it just reports that the file does not exist(!)

This is a known bug in pcmanfm and thunar across all distributions who are using gtk+2.0-2.20.0. As soon as patches become available updates will be shipped. Icon view mode still works fine.

Ah - that explains re pcman. However, I cannot replicate the problem in thunar which behaves fine for me in all view modes. It won't browse my network though with or without plugins. I'll probably give some other lightweight desktop a try. I've encountered more problems than I have patience to try and solve - given that I have a perfectly usable OS already running on this PC (good old new 2010 kde of course ) No sound out of the box so I stick an audio CD in to test, but it doesn't mount the CD. I find I have to download another module or something. So I try mplayer but it crashes when it can't find the CD. I know this is lightweight, but something as basic as mounting a CD/DVD or providing a network browser OOB is essential in my view. Perhaps I am just not used to this type of cut-down software - it is my first excursion after all. I want my cake and eat it too I guess. Perhaps after trying others I'll be back eating humble pie I am mainly testing pclinuxose17 for a friend who has an old HP Pavilion which runs Win XP at a snail's pace. I thought maybe that a lightweight DT such as this might be the answer but he hasn't a prayer of being able to use this I'm afraid - I'll end up doing it for him all the time. I think I'll try 2010 kde which I am sure he will convert to OK providing it is not too slow. Thanks for the help though. RJ

Thanks for the tip. Yup - I did check the firewall. It reports that everything is open. Not sure if that means it is not running (which is what I would have expected) or that it is running but allowing full access. If it is the latter, I can't see the point of it running if it doesn't restrict access? Anyway - which ever the case, I don't think it is the cause of not being able to browse my network - but then I don't have much experience of firewalls, running linux and all that . Anyway I'm going to try another OS - see later post.

There is a gadget on the desktop called places. Once the CD is loaded in the tray you could try mounting it via that gadget. I found it to be quite useful. For some, running 'alsaconf' in a terminal as root solves the no sound issue. Could be the sound card wasn't proper identified on boot up of the live cd. Samba shares is actually on the live cd, but I haven't tinkered with it long enough to give sound advice on it, but maybe one of the other e17 users can. Also, Phoenix and LXDE are lightweight desktops you can try. Openbox, when it is available, is probably going to be a bit too geeky for you but is also an excellent alternative. Zen mini is another lightweight distro based on PCLinuxOS, so there is really no need to feel boxed in with any thing that you are not comfortable with. Find something that suits you and you are happy with, then enjoy!!

Linuxera - sound advice and plenty of it - what more could a guy ask. Must be a mind reader too: I am currently downloading lxde for a test drive. Boy, I just love all this choice

Dolphin seems to perform properly in Enlightenment - why not make use of that, instead?

Ah! Good thinking. I was thinking only of a light-weight file manager. I naturally assumed that there would be an overhead with dolphin - perhaps dragging in other stuff as part of its dependencies. Of course there is no a priori reason why this should be so. Just used to kde and some of the overheads that come with that. I'll bear it in mind when I try LXDE and/or Phoenix - if I find any problems with whatever FM's they serve up...

Just an update: I am trying lxde which looks a lot more promising than e17 but when I look at installing Dolphin, it says this can only be done by installing task-kde4-minimal. This would entail installing getting on for another 50-60 packages. Surely this might slow my speedy light-weight DT?

I needed some KDE packages, so I did the install. I've not seen any differences, though I've only used the apps I needed and have not started any others or logged into KDE.
