im pretty sure it wasn't really compiz, but yea went ahead and enabled it on my bedroom desktop jus for giggles and ran it for maybe a minute playing with the cube when my monitor started flickering then it sequenced together and spread apart about 5 times and wouldn't turn off then it looked like behind the screen turned a grayish color and a puff of smoke came out the back and man did it smell awful my roommates are still complaining about the smell like its my fault or something lol but yea don't really think it was compiz the monitor is probably at least 6 or 7 years old its one of those old crt monitors but it matched my shoe box comp perfectly
was wondering though is it even possible it could have been compiz wouldn't think so but man what a coincidence i mean it wasn't even a minute after i rotated the cube around like 10 times that it did it

One of your friends accidentally spilled his beer on the back of your monitor while he was watching the rotating cube. I once had a DVD/CD drive die when I put in a distributions LiveCD to test.

Yeah, it's got to fail sometime. Most likely when it's being used.-)

hello and welcome to the forum
since it is a old crt monitor, the only thing it can damage it is a wrong resolution or refresh rate
this settings can be set by you, the system just limit itself to follow your instructions
i have a samsung syncmaster 793df, it is 4 years old 17" monitor, i was doing some stuff in windows xp(maybe linux, can't remember maybe xp) when it did bang!!!
the image disappeared and the the monitor itself was off even when i didn't turned it off, the smell of burned wires was very strong
the monitor was under the 36 months warranty, so to warranty it was sent
the answer was that the monitor has problems with the flyback(maybe another name) and one of the welded points wasn't doing proper contact creating the mentioned situation
i went to for my monitor when it was ready and i mentioned that before the damage the monitor had a very annoying flickering on one corner of the screen and had weird noises sometimes
the person that did the repairs told me that it was the cable detachid from the pcb of the monitor, possibly caused by a over the limit resolution, i referred to the manual and this monitor can go up to 1280x1024 pixels at 60hz, when it failed it was on 1152x864 at 75 hz refresh rate, the maximum on this unit is 100mhz and the minimum is 60
at the end when i showed the person who did the repairs that it wasn't my fault he just said that it was just a not properly welded cable, nothing to worry
in samsung and lg crts was a common problem, that is one of those nice things on lcds, nothing gets so hot that it can un-weld it by itself
as you see crts are prone to failures but you can find exceptions, i have a old samsung from 1995, still in use, never fixed and doing ok
compiz works under the resolution and refresh rate set by the system or you
it doesn't do anything that a good game can't do, show nice textures in the screen
in fact, if compiz could burn something that would be the video card
in your case no warranty will accept the monitor for repairs, if you can find a person capable of fixing it at a reasonable price it is probably a good solution but under the current prices of monitors available, a good 20" lcd monitor will be a cheaper and faster solution

You can pick up another crt just about anywhere for next to nothing. I have crt monitors in the garage and probably 2 or three around the house, I usually just give them away to people that need them.

Yep, can happen ....... but not by compiz. I blew an old monitor like that some time ago by running a liveCD ....... it barely got to displaying the desktop - not that I could see it properly - and BANG! and smoke etc etc. Older monitors had no protection from being over-driven, so resolutions out of range could destroy them. I doubt your monitor fell into such a category, and suspect it was just time for it to die ...... or some weakness in the circuitry failed at that time. Monitors are more impressive when they die like that, than ever before in their lives!

post 'wanted' on craigs list. say will pay 10.00 for computer in closet with good case or maybe pick up for free. Or better will tutor them with a live cd of 2010, should the day arrive.
Most have to pay to get rid of computers, and the 2nd biggest dump in USA is garage and closets.
And to think i used to make a living in the thoriated tungsten thermionic emitter days.

almost anyone you do a house call to will want to get rid of their boxy monitor of the past.
But think of it, a good crt monitor in theory will easily outperform cheap lcd's.
Compensate by improving your outdoor lighting:
Are you lighting up more than your property and paying for it? Like your neighbors bedrooms?
Google international dark sky association, and stop theses stupid laws being passed about plasma displays taking too much power.
Outdoor lighting is much easier and better to control than home electronics.
And fluorescent bulbs aren't a cure.
Get a high performance CRT before they are are all gone.
Only they can produce a really true black level, and have the phosphors to reproduce 50 years of perfected video technology.

"Only they can produce a really true black level, and have the phosphors to reproduce 50 years of perfected video technology. " wow! you do love crts! last time i had to move around a 17" crt 2 streets i almost fainted don't want to think on trying with a 21" crt, the only real reason to stay with crts this days in general a good 20 to 24" will do it better than most crts i have used, will use less electricity and give me less radiation when i use it
