I just purchased a miniature USB speaker system from NewEgg. Truly miniature, and with just one cord, the USB cord.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836280003

The box claims that it will work in Windows, MacOS, and Linux.  It was delivered to me Friday at work and I immediately plugged it into my Windows XP computer.  Works fine, sounds good.

It doesn't work for me in Linux, not in KDE 3.5 nor in 2010 Beta2.  Can anybody offer some advice?  I did searches of the forum and on Google, but didn't find anything especially helpful.   Sad

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,

Have you tried the manufacturers web site to see if the have drivers (you never know, they may just be one of the "good guys" in the linux world  Wink  Or am I dreaming!!

ps, I'm guessing theres no driver disk in the box ?

I installed PCLinuxOS 2010Beta2 on one computer with onboard sound and a USA Headset. They both work but you have to switch to the one you will use. Right click on the sound icon in system tray and choose the Show mixer window and it should show both usb and sound card. Here you choose the USA and then select the master channel.

Works here..

Good Luck

Thanks for the responses!

menotu: No, no drivers. But there weren't supposed to be. It is marketed as being driver free, not needed. My googling has produced very little information, but it seems that when USB sound works, it works quite well. Or it doesn't work at all.

lsword: When I show the mixer I see only a few sliders for setting volume. I've never been too sure which is which, but what I have now is outputs only (why?): Line, Microphone, IGain, and Digital1. Microphone is an output?   Huh

Changing the Master Channel doesn't do anything I can detect.

I think Larry tried to put up a screenshot of his mixer panel, or something similar, and it didn't work.

Been there, done that, more than once.   Roll Eyes   Grin

Andy try this,

I never could get my USB speaker working property in PCLinux 2009, however, in 2010 Beta open Configure Your Desktop and click on Computer Administrator then click on Multimedia.  Are your USB speakers shown under Audio Output?  If so, reorder the preferences and reboot.

My thanks and apologies to everyone who responded.  I now have both analog and USB sound working in PCLinuxOS 2010 Beta2.  It's pretty cool actually, as it allows me to send different audio to different speakers.  For instance, I'm sending music to the USB speakers, but video sound to the analog speakers.  (At least for now, I'm just playing with things at this point.)

Apologies are due because it took so long to resolve this due to operator error.   Roll Eyes   Embarrassed

I have several different distros and versions installed on a test machine, as well as my trusty old KDE 3.5.10 main machine.  On the test machine I got confused about which version I was working with and couldn't follow the suggestions given in this thread.  After a very nice Easter dinner and a little nap I tried again and got everything working OK.

Basically I followed the suggestions of lsword and jif001 and they worked fine in PCLOS 2010 Beta2.

No joy with v2009, same as jif001.

Thanks again for the help!

Andy
