I am trying to decide what to install on my old laptop.  So I tried out all the beta's, and they are all good.  I just can't make up my mind.

LXDE is the one I am leaning towards, because it is so light and fast, plus it is easy for me to learn (looks similar to kde).  Then I tried E17, and wow, that is one nice desktop... I don't think it is as light as LXDE, but I am not sure.  Then just for kicks I tried ZenMini... I am not a gnome fan, but wow, I think that is my favorite.  Such a nice clean setup.  However I don't know if it will be too much for my old laptop.  I may just have to try it at see... But I think the LXDE will probably be the best because it is the lightest desktop.

Anyway, I just wanted to say great job on all of these.  It has made my it very difficult for me to make up my mind on which one to use...

Congratulations to all the contenders for lightweight desktops.  Texstar has certainly made it easier for us, as the base we are using is as rock solid as any you can find, even at beta stage.  I too have had my decision making issues in the past, but fell in love with MM long ago.  Can't wait to see it coming around the bend too.

Good luck in choosing whatever desktop you want to use.  Whatever you choose it will be great!!  Linux = The Power of Choice!!  Wink

Yep, all Beta's are good, stable and fast. Tex & Neal & siamer & linuxera & Sproggy did a fantastic job.

I'm a bit confused here - are all the "lightweights" Beta1, with cpufreq not working, or Beta2? Please enlighten me ...

I used beta2 on e17, but it's called beta1 simply because it's the first e17 beta out?  I can't answer for the others betas.

Thx, Linuxera! I asked because I had no luck with remastering KDE 4.4 Beta2 PCLOS - getting rid of KDE, that is, putting gdm, LXDE on it and remastering it but that darn thing didn't automount USB sticks and had trouble recognizing DVD burners.

So your e17 ISO, based on Beta2, comes in extremely handy ...! Just downloading ...  Grin

Oh COOL BEANS.  Let me know how it goes tuxfriend.  Remember it's beta and I'm still adding/taking away.  Hopeully we are close, just some settings that needed to be added, and maybe an app or two?

tuxfriend,
In LXDE, PCManFM is used in mounting usb sticks. Open it with the stick plugged in and look for an entry on the left. Click it, and it will open to your stick.
Beta2 of PCLXDE will be coming soon.

The clever thing is,you could use all of them quite simply by looking for... task-Gnome,Lxde,Xfce,etc......from Synaptic.
They are all superb Smiley Smiley
