I have an atheros card, and it works fine, no need to copy anything. Perhaps check that  /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist does not have it listed as blacklisted. Had that with one of the variants once, had to comment out the blacklist, then run "modprobe ath5k" to initialise it without needing to reboot, then was able to use it.
