Hi
Downloaded and installed the new Beta release of PCLOS 2010.
Installation worked without a hitch and looks awsom.

The install was done on an ASUS laptop with Nvidia GeForce G 310M graphic card (512mb)
Went to PCLOS Control Centre and looked at the graphic server setup. It identified the graphics card as "NVidia GeForce 6100"
I Then went to "Configure 3D Desktop effect" and the PC locked up.

Any idea what the issue is or how to resolve?

yes, install the nvidia driver for the video card, nvidia video cards usually require a driver that can be found on synaptic, i remember another post mentioning that same video card, you could do a search for that post and see what driver was installed

Researched other posts and cannot identify appropriate driver.
Also no other post had an issue with PCLOS 2010 locking up

i was talking about the video driver only, can't speak about 2010 beta since it is a beta version that is for testing purposes only and is here to find errors and help developers create a better final 2010 livecd

about the driver, install the latest one available on the repo in that 2010 installation, if you have stability problems, try another video driver while you find the right nvidia driver to install or to test

I thought 2010 beta1 has the nvidia drivers already installed, or perhaps just the most common ones. You might need to check it's using the right one in PCC though.

There used to be common conflicts between compiz and KDE 4, but I hear they are less frequent these days. KDE 4 has many similar effects (cube, wobbly windows etc.) built in and runs faster without compiz.

don't know what video driver tool it has, i only tested it on virtual box

"You might need to check it's using the right one in PCC though."

it is required a very recent nvidia driver for the model he has

there is no conflicts with kde4 and compiz, there is a problem with the taskbar in full screen mode but it has some workarounds

"KDE 4 has many similar effects (cube, wobbly windows etc.) built in and runs faster without compiz."

this is only for some users, i can't use kde4 desktop effects(too slow, video errors) but compiz works perfect here, the problem seems to be the driver used and the system specs available

it asks too much machine

Had a look at the available drivers in the repo. There is only 2 and both are installed.
Problem is I cannot go into Configure 3d Desktop without locking the PC.

I also noticed that if I try to logout, shutdown, or restart the system, the PC hangs/locks

Have you updated since your initial install ? See if that cures anything (remember this is a beta so some bugs are inevitable - but terrible when they happen to yourself  Huh

Yep....All updates were applied. No change.
I understand it's a beta and am only trying to help highlight possible issues Smiley

You need to set up your graphical server, and then it will offer to use the proprietary nvidia  driver, which you accpt, then log out and back in to enable it. THEN you can setup 3D desktop stuff.

On two computers the nvidia driver was installed during installation. But on this third machine that I loaded up last night I had to do the steps above to enable 3d desktop effects using KDE. But never did I have any lockups trying to change the 3d settings.

Not sure its going to help with your lockups, but the above is what I did to get KDE compositing working.

When doing the steps above it comes back and says to reboot the machine if you changed the drivers so that is what I did.

Sorry to hear about your lockups. Its frustrating when it happens to you.
