I have looked at the solutions offered to this in the past, and mine seems a bit different
I have installed Enlightenment from Synaptic. It shows up in the Sessions chooser at boot-up. When I choose Enlightenment, everything goes well to a point, and then the screen flashes, and the KDE desktop opens up per usual. Not enlightenment E-17. Regular PCLinuxOs. Interestingly, I tried to run a live iso of Mandriva today, and the same thing happened. The computer said I was booting from the DVD, but instead, PCLinuxOs opened up after a brief flash.
Is there some way around this? From time to time I like to play around, but I seem to be frozen in the KDE desktop of PCLinuxOs, even when trying to boot from the DVD.

did you opened synaptic and searched for task-enlightenment?
if you didn't installed this package that selects and install all the required packages, you didn't installed it properly
this package is under tasks section in synaptic
"The computer said I was booting from the DVD, but instead, PCLinuxOs opened up after a brief flash."
i haven't used on a very long time mandriva but this sounds like you didn't set your system to boot form the dvd drive or the dvd drive is not working properly and failed to boot from the dvd or the dvd wasn't burned properly

Hi steveb357or the dvd drive is not working properly and failed to boot from the dvd or the dvd wasn't burned prop Check in your bios that your system is set to boot from your CD/DVD first Have you tried booting from another CD/DVD to double check that its not a dodgy disk ? KDE desktop opens up per usual. Not enlightenment E-17. Regular PCLinux Just a thought but if you are using "autologin" go to PCC control centre > Boot > and make sure you have set "Default Desktop" to enlightenment

If you can keep you head while all around you are losing theirs, then you have misunderstood the situation.

Thanks. I've found that I suddenly can't boot from any other device, though they show up in the boot options screen. No matter what live distro, on whatever medium, whether installed or from CD, DVD, or USB drive, they won't boot. The regular PCLinuxOs KDE manager opens. This is quite new, just in the last few days. I've never had this problem before. I enjoy experiementing around with distros and window managers, and now it just won't do it. Could that be a failing DVD ROM reader?

I thought so, but I can't boot from USB drive either. Also, My Alt-F2 key has stopped working I use Gnome-Do a good deal, and it won't keep the preference settings I make, or remain docked. Perhaps there is a breakdown on a larger scale at work here. I downloaded the ISO for the Beta release of PCLinux, and can't get it to burn on a dvd. It will allow me to make a data disk, but not burn an image file. When I try to burn an image file, Brasero and K3b both will not find a dvd or cd when I try to burn the ISO file. Both programs say there is no disk in the drive. Without closing either program, if I then want to put data on it, the disk is imediately recognized for data.

time to do maintenance to the system, unplug it from the electricity and remove battery
also if it has a reset bios jumper or switch, time to use it
a good clean sometimes removes dust that gives weird errors
check cables on all devices, all must be properly connected

Hi steveb357, if the problem is hardware maybe you could open the PC case and check that the CPU fan is working, as overheating CPU can cause alot of problems, and you could also try taking out the memory modules and putting them back (reseating them, you could try doing that also with the CPU, but be careful). If you can boot from your CD/DVD it could be worth checking that the masterboot record in the Grub bootloader is set correctly (especially if you have 2 hard drives installed). Good luck, .
