Oh I get it now. Windows 7 is the new MOJAVE II

« on: March 07, 2010, 11:15:04 AM »

Hello everyone

I have a question I was going through my hard just checking on the amount of space i have left you know spring cleaning LOL

now my partition is as follows:

/home  81 G
/root     80 G
/swap   35 G

when I search a couple of possibles came up

/var or the /tmp

The /var folder contained 26 G while the temp folder had 6.7 Mb just wondering can I safely delete the contents in this folder or is there another way to clean temp files

your swap partition is 35 gigabytes?

35?!?!

what you do with 35 gbs in swap that you can't with 1?!

the tmp, it is better not to delete it when the system is running and some apps will not like that you delete it, there is a couple of posts mentioning this topic and some suggestions to follow but in general, if it is not more than 100mbs, why bother deleting it when you will require to reinstall pc with pclinux 2010 in a couple of months

If you do empty the var directory files & folders you are going to be in for trouble.

Also, if you go to PCC>Boot>Setup Boot System>Advanced, you can check the box that says Clean Tmp Files at Boot. It'll manage your Tmp size without conflicting with running programs.

You can also check this box when installing PCLOS.

But be aware that when you check "Clean Tmp Files at Boot" this implies that your tmp will be in memory, not using that tmp folder on the HD! Check your /etc/fstab file ("none...tmpfs"). Therefore your tmp is automatically emptied when you shutdown.

what kind of trouble?
go into the folder and check what folder uses most space. System logs go in /var/log. The contents of this folder can be safely deleted and it can get pretty big if somebody is log happy and log each and everything

open up the terminal and type the following command and enter root's password when asked

su -c "du -sch /var/*"

what did the command give you?

i do not see why the folder will get that big. You can run filelight or any other tool that shows disk usage on the folder and see where the space is going to.

backing up is more effective when the backed up files are on a separate drive, preferably out of the computer that has the original files.

u should have a little talk with that backing utility  Cheesy ..its looks like its being lying to you for a while now .. 26GB!!! mhh..
