Never stop learning!

Could we add an "Absolute Beginner Section" to the forum?

We have an Advanced User section, and I have seen beginner sections in other forums. I think everyone, not just newcomers to Linux, could learn something.....

Thanks!

(If you want to wait until the new iso is released, that's ok too.)

ROFL!  You need 10 posts in the beginner section before you can post in the Sandbox!

I think an Absolute Beginners section on the forum would be a great way for new users to learn.

It would also balance out the advanced users section nicely.

I think it makes sense that should such an area be agreed on, that it happen to coincide with the 2010final, so as not to confuse anyone through the beta release stage

Hi MeeMaw!

It seems there are some here who do not want to heed your advice of "Never stop learning!"  Grin
It seems they are content with the little they know.  Wink

I have thought of joining a Linux forum to try to further my knowledge of Linux.  I am not content with the little I know.  Cheesy  But then I thought ...ugh...one more password and user name....more clutter in the bookmarks.

When I saw that you had suggested an Absolute Beginner Section......that would only take a tiny teeny space away from all the Experts here....I thought that would be great!  We would be here among friends. Nothing like looking foolish and beginnerish among friends.  Roll Eyes

An Absolute Beginner Section means absolute beginner in anything you are an absolute beginner in. That would surely give opportunity for just about everyone to participate who wants to.

The section could be for questions or just plain discussion of problems. A place where you could brag on what you finally learned.  And we would accommodate those who are absolute beginners in humor too.  Grin

And it would be a place where absolutely no one would tell you to Search First!!   Grin No one would say...oh that has already been covered twenty fold.

And of course we would expect everyone to uphold the high standards of behavior that the forum holds.   Huh

Does that about cover it?

And MeeMaw....are you getting ready to go to Hawaii?   Grin

I guess all the ones that we (the slightly seasoned) forget we wanted to ask, but chose to lurk to wait for someone more knowlegeable to answer.

With the first thread entitled ' how to use the search button', same rules apply but the content would be more exploratory? rather than out right help questions

I don't think you have ever looked beginnerish or foolish!

Well, everyone else has used their custom-designed ms_meme avatar........ I just thought I would for a while too. I just changed colors on the clothes as I like blue and purple much better than green. (Also, I've already been to Hawaii.... it's beautiful!  Doing a zip-line on New Year's Day was awesome!)

RTFM would be ... if we were anywhere else but THIS forum. RTFM is NOT allowed here, if my memory serves me correctly. We have a reputation as a friendly and helpful forum, where users are directed to specific information to help solve their problem, rather than RTFM. That "term" has been used (overused) by many others, creating an elitist perception of those Linux forums that do use it, and of the users who use it.

We need to encourage new users by being helpful and directing them to where to find the information they need to solve their problems, or to help get them up and running -- and enjoying the benefits of running Linux that many of us already profit from (metaphorically).

We all also need to remember that not a single one of us came out of the womb knowing how to run Linux. We had to learn. If you learned by "reading the freaking manual," then more power to you. But having been an educator, I am fully aware that not everyone learns the same way, and may need a bit more guidance than someone who self-educated themselves by "reading the freaking manual." As a community, we should all be more tolerant of those who learn differently.

The perception of Linux being for computer elitists has its foundation mostly in the attitudes that gave birth to RTFM, and all the other little phrases that those attitudes conjured up, driving new users from Linux. That, IMHO, is NOT what we should be doing.

I am 1000% behind the Absolute Beginner's Section of the forum, since it not only strikes a balance with the Advanced User's Section, but also makes the PCLinuxOS Forum a friendly and welcoming place for all, from advanced users, to intermediate users, and on to the newest beginner just getting a taste of Linux. And we can make that "taste of Linux" sweeter for those users just starting out by giving them a place to ask all the questions they have in getting up to speed, without the fear of looking stupid or dumb. If anyone here doesn't like the idea, the solution is simple: stay out of the Absolute Beginner's Section, and don't offer your help.
