I have KDE4 and ATI proprietary drivers.  When I first login, I go to Configure Your Desktop->Desktop->3D Effects.  Compositing state shows disabled.  I enable it and it works fine.  But after a reboot, I Have to repeat the steps.  The compositing won't stay enabled.  I've also tried ALT-Shift_F12 (which a popup winow states can be done to cycle compositing.

Any ideas?

Reading online I saw others had the same issue related to the ATI Graphics card.  The workaround is to modify DisableChecks=false to be DisableChecks=true in the file ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc.

I'm not sure what side-effects this will have, but it solved the compositing issue for now.
