When I try install VMware workstation 6.5.2 or 6.5.3, it hangs in the same place:
Code:
Installing VMware Installer 1.0
Copying files...
Configuring...
Installing VMware Player 2.5.2
Copying files...
Configuring...
Installing VMware VIX API 1.6.3
Copying files...
Configuring...
Installing VMware Player 2.5.2
Copying files...
Configuring...
Installing VMware Player 2.5.2
Copying files...
Configuring...

Anyone have any idea why this is happening, and how to fix it?

Hi rick, I'm sorry no-one who can help you with this has been along yet - I wish that I could myself.

I don't know whether or not you have run VMware before on PCLinuxOS, or are running any flavour of VMware currently. Just in case you are not, perhaps you should be warned that several of us long-time VMware Server users are having problems getting it to work properly on fully updated PCLinuxOS systems at present. As I understand it, this is because the current version of GCC has moved ahead of that which was used to create the current kernels in the main repo, which leads to problems building the kernel module that VMware requires. There are a few recent threads on this board that mention this issue.

Please excuse me if this comment does not help - perhaps VMware Workstation users will be able to advise on your specific problem, or on the likely outcomes if you are able to get beyond this and move to the next stage of installation. I only mention it to warn you that you might be in for a bit of a struggle getting VMware fully functional at present, and that VirtualBox might be a better option if you do not use it already!

Thanks fraxinus,

the kernel/complier mismatch seems to make sense. I also have a problem installing workstation 7. It seems the VMWare installer can't find the kernel headers.

I have looked at VirtualBox, but there are couple of issues with it that keeps me with VMWare. It is very easy to move a VMWare Vm from computer to computer, which I do fairly often. Also, it is harder to set up bridged networking in Virtual Box.

Hopefully the kernel/compiler issues wil be resolved soon.

Thanks fraxinus,

Not at all, rick - and I concur with all of the specific points you make in your post! Perhaps the new ISO, when is available, will resolve the matter.

VMware works with the updated kernels in testing and will work on the 2010 release. There is a patch etjr (pclos developer) included that makes it work though I prefer Virtualbox.

Thanks. Is the 2010 release schedule posted?

Sometime a little after the release of KDE 4.4 final.

Thanks very much for the information, Texstar. I shall keep on dual booting for a few weeks! I know that it's possible to get the current VirtualBox to run VMware .vmdk files but I have failed to get this to work for me, probably something to do with my vm files being split into 2GB slices.
