number keypad is opposite (solved)

Upgraded from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.3 and I have noticed that when the light in the numbers lock button is off I can use the numbers keypad, but when I press the numbers lock button and the light in the button is on then then I can not type any numbers.

Is there a way to reverse this so when the indicator light for the "num lock" the numbers keypad is doing what it is suppose to do?

It is just the opposite of how it worked with KDE 3.5

are you in a laptop?

is it a special keyboard or a standard (cheapo) keyboard?

have you tried to configure the keyboard model in pclinux control center?

my very very cheap keyboard works well in kde4 so don't have more ideas

I just logged out of KDE to try it in Gnome, and as soon as GDM came up with the log in panel the numbers lock light came on and the numbers keypad is operating correctly.  Also works correctly in Gnome.  Numbers light on and I can type numbers.

It is only opposite in KDE.

Also this is a multi-media keyboard from an older HP Pavilion desktop.

I just read your post:

2 questions:

1) Is numlock enabled in BIOS? If so, disable it.
2) Do you have a saved session ( say, via Switch User, rather than having done a true log out)? If so, eliminate it.

I have experienced your situation before and the culprit has always been one of these 2 situations. Hopefully, yours has the same cause. Good luck!

in PCC goto "system" -> "manage  system service and turn on "numlock".   On the next reboot your system should work as expected.

It shows that num_lock is running and "on boot" is checked.

1. Numlock was enabled in the bios.  So I turned it off.
2. I have never used Switch User.  I have always logged out and in.

I can not check this now because all I did was a reboot and went into the bios to turn off the numlock and now my other problem of KDE locking up while it is loading came back.

I switched to using GDM and now KDE is locking up again.  I am currently using Gnome to post this reply.
Oh and I went back into the bios to enable the numlock and KDE is still locking up.

Sorry to hear that your having such problems. I can state with a fair degree of confidence, that your returning lock-up problem has nothing to do with either disabling, nor enabling numlock in the BIOS. The re-appearance of the lock-up problem is merely co-incedental to the BIOS numlock setting. Don't waste your time trying to troubleshoot a non-existant culprit. The problem is elsewhere.

Actually when I was able to get KDE to load, turning off num lock in the bios did fix the problem with KDE.

But that is now a mute point since KDE is back to locking up and I am using Gnome at the moment,

Sighhhhh...

Although my kde4 runs very well indeed (with the exception of a few automount feature plasma applets and some errors concerning kaffeine definitions in the Device Actions menu -- I suspect both issues will be resolved by the 2010 iso for PCLOS (KDE4) release -- the product appears to still be a little too touchy for some setups.
