i could not find vmware/wmvare in the synaptic.
it shows vmware video drivers installed.
how do i go about getting vmplayer/workstation ?

You can get vmware stuff from: http://www.vmware.com/

Most of us use the OSE version of Virtualbox of which is in the repository.
