Sony Vaio - Can't Connet - Wired or Wireless

I just purchased a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 7 on it.  I installed PCLos 2009.2 on to an external hard drive by removing the internal HD,  booting from a thumb drive, and then installing to the external HD. 

The problem:

I cannot connect with either my wired or wireless connections under PCLos.  I have searched this site and tried every recommendation that even remotely looks like my issue.  (I do have PCLOS running on an older desktop system and am very happy with it.)

The wireless adapter is an Ateros AR9285, the wired network adapter is a Marvell Tech Group device.

I know vista drivers don't work with ndiswrapper, not sure about win7 drivers.  Can you find an XP, win98 or win2000 driver for that?

From a little googling, it looks like the wireless is probably the AR9285. The ath9k drivers should work with this and are included in the mainline kernel since 2.6.27.

your hardware maybe too new for stable kernels. Try to install newer kernels from testing and see if they work

I went to the site and downloaded the file as directed.  When I ran "make" I received this, "ERROR: CONFIG_MAC80211_QOS is somehow enabled in your kernel, how did that happen if it wasn't an option in your kernel?  Please report this to the linux-wireless mailing list.  Stop.

I'm lost at this point.  How do I disable CONFIG_MAC80211_QOS?

You shouldn't have to compile the driver, I think we already have it in Synaptic.  You may need a newer kernel though, also available in Synaptic.

If the ath9K is the one that'll run this baby then let's get rid of the preloaded ath_pci module and preload the ath9k and blacklist the ath_pci.

I don't know how update Synaptic without a network connection.  Is there a newer PCLOS distro I can use?

rpm -Uvh kernel-2.6.32.2-pclos5-1-1pclos2010.i586.rpm

you must be root when running the command and you must execute the command when in the same folder the package is

the package should install if it doesnt doesnt have any dependencies

Thats what happens when trying to install offline.

you said you cant connect go online using both wired and wireless connection and you didnt rule out simple things like the problem coming from you not getting an ip address.

what do you get from  these commands(you will be asked for root password on the first command):

su -c "/etc/init.d/network restart"

ifconfig

dmesg

put your results inside "code" tags to increase readability

did you try to create a new wired or wireless connection in pcc? what error did you get

My frustration level finally peaked so I installed the 64 bit distro for Mandriva and all my network devices were recognized.  Once PCLOS is released as a 64 bit version I will most likely switch back.
