After updating to KDE 4 system locks up

Are you using KDM or GDM to select your desktop and log in? Maybe try the other one. Maybe try reinstalling them.

KDM  I can select and use Gnome just fine, only have problems with KDE4

And I have already tried to do a reinstall of KDM.  Did a search for KDM in Synaptic and came up with several themes.

Then found kdebase4, kdebase4-workspace, kdebase4-runtime.  Reinstalled each one, one at a time and made no difference.

But can't you select KDE4 from the GDM screen? The log-in screen shouldn't change according to which desktop you select.

What I'm saying is this appears to be a display manager problem with KDE4, so I wondered whether changing or reinstalling the display manager might help. (The display manager produces the graphical log-in page.

start pcc -> boot -> set up display manager

Thank you that fixed it.  Works fine with GDM.

And now I have several more options when I click on the red power button.

Logout
Turn off Computer
Restart Computer

Before with KDM I only had one option, "Logout"

And now I can select Gnome, or KDE.

I am not sure if I should mark this as being solved, considering that using KDM does not work for me.  Does anyone else have problems with KDE4 and KDM?

I guess I spoke too soon.
The other day I had an issue with the "num lock" lite off and the numbers keypad is working.  It was suggested to go into the bios and turn off the "num lock", so I did.  Rebooted the desktop and now Kde is locking up with GDM.

Since I also have Gnome on this desktop, I am using Gnome now.

you are describing a failing kde4 installation, maybe a partial installation too

Ok I have changed repos, now how do I verify if I am missing something or a file is broken?

Reload it and see if upgrades are available. If you have broken packages there's a section to check on these and it should show "broken" in the bottom of the window frame.

Click the reload button in Synaptic and check the status bar doesn't warn of broken packages. If it does, go to the broken package section and see what they are and post here.

If all is OK click mark all upgrades to see whether there is anything else to install.

Then you have no broken or missing packages, at least none Synaptic can detect.

Ever since I installed KDE 4 my numlock light goes out the first time I touch a modifier key (Shift, alt or Ctrl), so that seems to be normal, albeit obviously a minor bug of some kind. If changing BIOS settings has introduced more problems I would change them back. If the numlock light going out bothers you, you can always bring it on again by pressing the numlock key twice, though it will only stay on until the next modifier key is pressed.

After KDE started locking up again I went back into the bios and set the num lock back the way it was, and that made no difference.
