Can anybody help me find and install the printer driver for my Canon iP1000?

Usually Canon has Linux drivers for their printers. Did you look on the CD or check Canon's support site? You'll also find something like meta-canon-printer in our repos. You could try installing it and see if the OS figures out the right driver for it.  Might or might not work for yours, but worth a try as a first step.

I found the needed driver on software.canon-europe.com, but it's only for Operating system(s):         SUSE Linux Professional 9.1;I'll check for meta-canon

What format is it in? RPM, source, something else? It should be possible to use the driver with any distro, possibly with some finagling. If you know the name of it, you can see whether it's in the meta package.
