I was just hoping that KDE3 would remain stable until KDE4.4 is released. Then I might make the change.
And I was just hoping KDE3 would remain usable until the gang came up with a PLCOS iso that installed KDE4.x as default, so I could just wipe my system and re-install.  It's beginning to look like that's not gonna be the case.   Angry

Sure it is possible, just stop doing the updates.  The warning was put out a way back saying that updating would eventually break KDE3.5.   I went as far as freezing a repository at kde3.pclosusers.com at the time.  I am really not to sure why everyone is crying about this. They were warned about it was going to happen if they kept updating.

Thankfully, I have several systems available to me, so when KDE3 finally breaks on one of them, I can recover well enough to update to KDE4...   Smiley

Well, I wouldn't call it crying, exactly.  Roll Eyes Like I said, I was just hoping for a "clean" break, with a fresh install of PCLOS with KDE4.

If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.  Won't be the first time I didn't get my way...

After 4 days update-notifier still was giving an error not to upgrade and I had waited until this morning to try to upgrade over 200 packages. When I reloaded Synaptic this morning there were even more upgrades (290), but finally kdeaddons was not listed in packages to be removed. Still, ekiga and evolution-data-server were still listed, along with some libs that were actually being replaced by files of new names. Be aware that when a file is renamed, which isn't a common practice only done for some good reason, it can't be upgraded, but the old one will be removed and the new one installed, and perhaps some other packages that depend on the file(s) will also have to be upgraded. I did the upgrade, which went smoothly, then just simply installed ekiga and evolution-data-server. No problem. This event demonstrates some unresolved dependency problems. All is well. KDE 3.5.10 still intact. How long that will remain I don't know.

As Texstar has pointed out in other posts

"I've tried to tell people that KDE 3 is no longer supported and no further updates or fixes can be expected from the KDE developers. I worked for months to provide a fairly stable KDE 4 release with upgrade instructions. I've made available KDE 4 3rd party applications as they have become available. I've built and offered alternatives for those can't do without applications. I've tried to keep packages separate that are needed by other DE's that would break things in KDE 3. I've provided instructions on how to install alternate desktops such as Gnome, LXDE and E17. I've pretty much have reached the end of the line here and can't really move forward without breaking things in KDE 3."

I have to get the supporting library and programs in place before I can do a KDE 4 iso. This of course will break various things in KDE 3.

In the repositories?  I don't really understand what you mean.

I too am eagerly awaiting a KDE4 iso so I don't have to tear my hair out at any complications in upgrading from KDE3---> KDE4.

If KDE 3.5 is no longer update-supported by PCLOS, how about an announcement here;
http://pclinuxos.com/
Where it would be official?  I didn't know (never seen a Texstar posting) until now.  Where are the official kde4 upgrade directions?  What do we do if the attempt borks our system? Is there a KDE4 install disk?
