Firstly can I just wish everyone associated with this brilliant site, both admin and users all, A Very Happy 2010!! Grin Grin

Over the past few months I have been buying some bits and pieces to build me a nice shiny new computer. A decent quality Gigabyte board, 4ghz of OCZ Reaper memory and finally a top of the range 965 Phenom 11 cpu. During the Christmas Hols I slowly put it together and got it fired up.

I buy Linux Format magazine which comes with a free dvd, usually with a few distros on. I have quite a few of these dvd's, plus all the iso's I've downloaded over the past nine months since converting to Linux. I didn't want to mess with my main pc as that has a nice PCLOS setup on it so decided to strip my backup pc which had a copy of Mandriva on it and was a rather sluggish Athlon 1500 given to me by my eldest son.

I always fancied Linux Mint so installed it and fired it up. Mmm, not quite what I expected although visually very good. Next came Kubuntu, sorry not for me. Open Solaris next, I just loved the look and feel of it, I thought the desktop was gorgeous. Err where was my cdrom? Try as I might I couldn't find it! Goodbye! Open Suse next, now, maybe this is the one, err no! I tried and tried different distros and was somehow disappointed with them all. So now, you've guessed it, I have two Linux boxes running PCLinuxOS! Grin Nuff Said? Grin Grin Grin

For the last month or so I've been having problems with my Mepis install (I triple boot, WinXP, Mepis,PCLinuxOS). It just hasn't been running well, so I decided to install something else. Tried CentOS for a few minutes, didn't like it. Same day, installed openSUSE 11.2 (I've used SUSE before, but it was too much for my old machine). Tried another distro and totally borked grub. Machine wouldn't even boot. Crap, so I used PCLinuxOS disk at first to see if I could fix grub, but figured what the heck, I went ahead and installed PCLinuxOS again. So now I have a triple boot of WinXP, and 2 (yes 2) PCLinuxOS on the same machine. I'm thinking about KDE 3.5 one one and KDE 4 on the other. As of now, I running KDE 3.5 on both. Anyway this distro recognizes all my hardware and is so easy to set up. Thanks to all who contribute to this fine version of linux.... Cheesy

I bought a Mepis live cd years and years ago just to have a play with. It always struggled with my network setup although I liked the distro itself. One of the magazine cds recently had one of the latest versions of Mepis and guess what, it struggled with my network again! I'm running Kde4.3 at the minute and it has me scratching my head now and again, silly things, the clock font is too large and I can't read the time properly! Grin But that's part of the fun of learning to use it and get my head round it.
