In another post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66749.0.html I said thanks to to TEX, the Ripper Gang, and every one else who works on PCLinuxOS.  I guess I should have mentioned Neal by name so Neal here is your Thank you and this is your kiss up.     I would like to recommend The LXDE version of PCLinuxOS.  We are really lucky that we have so many desktop environments available to us.  You can distro hop within PCLinuxOS.

I have LXDE installed on two old Thinkpads, and now that I have had about a week to play around with them, I really couldn't be happier!! The slower of the two is a ten year old X20, Celeron 500 w/384 RAM. The install couldn't have been easier, and the machine hums along at a surprisingly good pace. For older hardware, you can't beat LXDE, and I've played around with all the lightweight Linux distros. It really isn't even close, PCLXDE is much better than the rest.

My X20 is absolutely mint, and with PCLXDE, it's back to being a useful laptop. THANKS!!

Would installing task-lxde on a KDE system give the same results as installing the fresh iso? The lxde buzz is finally getting to me -- gonna have to try it, looks like.

Make sure you are updated fully and go for it. I had a kde3 minime install and put task-lxde on it and was running lxde in about 15 mins. After the install you can login to either desktop that you want.

There are some things on the ISO that are not included in task-lxde. That said, you should do fine with installing the task package to your KDE system. Be sure to update fully first.

I'd like to add my thanks to the LXDE team as well. I've recently returned to PCLinuxOS after too long an absence, and LXDE is very useful - yet pretty - on a 4 year old laptop that I turned over to my mother-in-law. I prefer KDE on newer machines, but LXDE is great - it won't frighten her away like Fluxbox might, yet still speedy on the old laptop.
(Not a knock against Fluxbox, but she's a total newbie and needs something fairly close to what she's used to on Windows. KDE is a little slow on that laptop and I want her to have the best experience of Linux possible)
