My two toddlers, 3 and 4 years old were claiming domain over the new Intel i5 system I build for my wife. Apart from the fact that she needs this PC to work on it's a tad extravagant for toddlers to fool around on a machine like that. I decided to give them their own PC to play "Dora" and whatnot on as I had a Pentium 4 sitting in a dusty corner. Figured to put a Linux OS on it and started to google as I was a small 10 years out of the Linux scene. Ubuntu seemed the popular choice. I spend an entire day to get the Ubuntu distrib to install on this P4 system...it wouldnt have it. I tried it with Fedora with about as much luck. Finally I went back to google and typed "most user friendly Linux distrib" I ended up here, downloaded the iso, burned it to CDR, loaded it and from there installed it all within an hour. Linux has some way to go still..unfortunately, but you guys topped the bill for me today. PCLinuxOS IS the most user friendly Linux distrib.

Texstar works very hard to make sure it stays that way. I hope your children enjoy it, for years.

Linux has some way to go still..unfortunately
Try using it for a while, and you just might change your mind about that. It's been my OS for more than 10 years, and allows me to do anything I ask of it. Welcome to the forum. Stick around, read some of the threads, drop in at the sandbox, and meet some of the other members of the community. We're a pretty friendly, somewhat crazy, but very helpful bunch, all in all. Be warned though, this place can become addictive.

Hi, MindVision! Too bad you had to find your way here the hard way, but it's worth it. There's absolutely nothing that can compare to the dedication and hard work put into this distribution. As for the people around here... as already mentioned, nice, helpful, but some... So, a friendly but crazy welcome from me!

Welcome to the best distro!!! I've been using it almost exclusively since I got here nearly 4 years ago.... it works well, and the community is great! (No matter what Crow tries to tell you, some of us are indeed a little crazy!!!! Amazingly enough, some of the craziest are also the most knowledgeable!!! You'll get good help here if you need it.)

MindVision-GDS, you may have had to do some updates before adding some stuff via Synaptic. That is because once installed, you can update nicely, but a new ISO may not boot as well on all computers. So until everything is co-ordinated between the kernel and the various startup scripts and hardware detection, we won't issue a further ISO.
The wonderful thing about a community distro is that it doesn't have to defer to the impatient, or the bean counters, or some fixed schedule, when it's ready, it's ready. That way we can make the new user experience like yours in the vast majority of cases.
I hope you enjoy using PCLinuxOS... welcome!

PCLinuxOS has no wealthy sponsors and can only survive with your donations! Don't wait it might be too late.
