Hi all.
This post is in the Testimonials (say something nice), but I am a bit disappointed TBH.
I downloaded pclinuxos-lxde-2009.4.iso today. The reason being, I want a light, snappy OS and I also want to keep the bandwidth usage down (BT are cracking down on me!).
The ISO I downloaded is 313MB. I thought that it would need some *minor* updates, being it is 4 months old, and need some tweaking to get my wireless and graphics up and running.
Boy, was I wrong! Synaptics is currently still downloading the updates - at a whopping 326MB! That is larger than the ISO I downloaded! Thankfully, it says it will only need an extra 53MB of space when it has finished, which has lead me to this post. Why on earth isn't there an updated version to download, if it has to update everything? Wouldn't that make more sense?
Is there an updated version that I have missed, or isn't being hosted on PCLinux's site? Can anybody point me in the right direction if one does exist?

Please don't get me wrong, I like this distro. It IS light and snappy. I am not flaming it, just asking why there hasn't been a new ISO ceated to include all of these updates.

Hi,

You can get one of my french remasters ? They are all very recent.

Some of them can be switched back to english (he Xfce one, and now a Zen Gnome, just wait till tomorrow). Well, I mean at login screen, otherwise you just need to start Addlocale and select English US -revert to US- and it will be done fast.

PCLinuxOS: A revolution in personal computing

There are a few hurdles to clear before the update, new kernel, etc, then the remasters can follow on from there.

Thank you, Melodie, for the offer of your remasters.
Can you tell me what PCLXDE-fr-Old-World-05-11-2009.iso is exactly? What is different about it compared to the pclinuxos-lxde-2009.4.iso - besides the newer date? Also, how could I change the locale to UK?
Thank you again. My bandwidth restrictions mean I will not be able to download it until next month, but I am interested.

Nothing wrong in your question at all Mark Smiley

PCLOS is a rolling release, meaning that all you ever have to do is update it from its base when you install it.

The further away it gets from its original release the larger the amounts for the updates can become, this can be an issue for those with limited bandwidth.

But once its updated and kept current, you always have the latest and greatest release.

This is where, (and I can't stress this enough to anyone) remastering your most current updated install is a godsend.

From your remaster you can install your entire system to a known good point with all the updates you need in a matter of minutes without losing anything. WOW...let me say that again WOW... Wink

In my mind PCLOS allows the user more control over what goes in and what comes out of their system more than any other OS I've used.

There are times when the distro guys will put out a new iso, but thats only when there are changes to the tool kits and some very major updates to the system that could break things.

There is a new release in the works but it takes a tremendous amount of time to package, install and test against numerous hardware configurations before it can be put out into the wild.

Thats where the forum comes in so handy, it gives the distro guys a chance to tweak and tweak, and tweak until everything is flowing as smoooth as silk.

You are an important link in this chain, why? because you are a user with intelligence and a passion for doing things, and learning (otherwise you wouldn't be here, right?) because you can give back information that can only make PCLOS better and better.

Its almost a zen like existence within our community, lol...jus kidding..or am I?

As the saying goes if it aint broke why fix it? lol...

So welcome and please ask when you don't understand, and comment when you do (or don't like me sometimes).

Your frustration is understandable, especially if you are working under severe bandwidth limitations.

However, please remember that the developer team here is very small indeed - and that PCLinuxOS now offers and supports OSs featuring LXDE, Gnome and XFCE as well as the 'main' KDE branch. Staying on top of all this as well as the transition from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4 involves them in a huge amount of work. I cannot speak for the team and the various ISO builders, but I feel certain that they would like to have updated ISOs available just as much as you would!

All the very best with your exploration of PCLinuxOS, and Animal is quite right about the benefits of remastering to help you deal with situations like this in the future, when you are 'up and running'.

Hi,

Thoses that contain the chain caracters "LXDE" have the Lxde desktop, KDE Kde, KDE4 Kde4 and so on.

Next month I think I will have put newer ones there. The last numbers are related to date. In the one you have said, 05-11-2009 means it's up to date of November 5th.

You can all switch to UK by starting Addlocale (the launcher is either on the desktop or in the Utilitaires directory which is on the desktop) and selecting en_UK in addlocale, which will turn it to UK english.

You can switch both the Xfce version and the Zen Gnome version directly at login screen. (I'm trying to find a way to get the other ones to offer the same feature, but I don't know how to do that yet).

Next month, the official new isos might as well be online.

What is different apart from the fact they are up to date: if you read there, Bilingual remasters with several desktops +improvements, and there, Old World fr Autumn remasters you will see the kind/style of modifications I did, with the help of a few people who offer their help on the way. Smiley
