Has your Thunderbird lost the ability to open url links in Firefox? Yes? Well, read on!
Thunderbird reads the /etc/thunderbird.cfg file when it starts up. You just need to edit it as follows: Ensure Thunderbird is not running. Start file manager in superuser mode. Open /etc/thunderbird.cfg with a text editor. Replace the existing text with that below. pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "firefox"); pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "firefox"); pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "firefox"); Save the file and close the file manager.
You should now be good to go.
Thanks to the original op (you know who you are; I don't, the original instructions were lost in the great data dump a while back.)
Thanks to CheeseQueen452 who pointed out that you only need to enter firefox instead of the full path. You could also save the /etc/thunderbird.cfg file some place else and just copy it over if mozilla changes it.
NOTE: The next section may not be necessary. But it may be an error handler with changes, so if you have problems try this. Open File Manager - Super User Mode Go to /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.4 (or whatever the folder is named) and copy the file run-mozilla.sh to the /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird-2.0.0.23 folder (or whatever the folder is named).
I hope this is the last edit. I really think I got it this time.
Rick.

I'm sure this would be helpful if I weren't such a noob.
I know how to get into superuser mode in a terminal. How do I start filemanager?

Sorry, it didn't work for me ! But like that, it's OK : Open Thunderbird "Edit / Préference/Advanced" (I'm not sure for the last ... in french "Avance", the last right item "Edit configuration" button seach "network.protocol-handler.app.http" and "ftp" and "https" click right, "modifie" and write "firefox" It seems like your notice, but it works for my system. Thank you for the help.

Hello denoobifyme and welcome to the forums.
To open file manager in super user mode, go to the menu -> System -> File Tools -> File Manager - Super User Mode It will ask for your root password. To change the file, just click on it and your text editor should open. If not, right click and choose open with text editor.
Good Luck
Rick.

Thanks Loren - worked for me. Quicker than the text editor and less scary :-)

For some reason, using Rick's fix (edit the .cfg file), the "http" setting did not stick, though "ftp" and "https" did. :\ Using Loren's method, I was able to see this and fix it. Thanks so much to both of you. It's been tedious not being able to link out directly from TB.

Yes, work for me - thanks so much for this thread - I was getting an annoying dialog, thus, just using the 'Copy Link Address" and pasting it into the browser's address bar.

Well, Rick - it's baaack!
Got TB 3.0 when I updated last night - now links in emails do nothing. Checked the config, and it still says "firefox" for the handlers...
Anyone else?

Yes - same here. Two of mine had changed to mozremote or something, changed back to firefox but no joy.
