will give that a try, and report back.  probably not tonight though.  I gotta figure out what you just said.   Grin

I do love learnin stuff, even if I still learn the hard way.  I'm just glad you didn't repost that donkey butt picture.

Boot the livecd, mount the affected partition and copy /sbin/fsck from the livecd to /sbin on the affected partition that refuses to boot. Then once you can boot from the hard drive install the package in the previous post.

First I must apologize for continuing to do things the "hard way".  You're instructions got me back into my install, and I did manage to use gparted to format my /data (hda9) directory to ext4, but, I failed to do this:

So  copying, once again.  BRB I hope.

Hi, i created a live kde4 cd, and it can't install on ext4? I updated all the mentioned packages to testing versions, but the mount says:
Code:
mount: unknown filesystem ext4

What i'm doing wrong?

Don't know. Guess you'll have to wait for 2009.3 iso as it works with ext4 because I just installed it in vbox about 10 minutes ago.

Well, I know what I did wrong, just trying to figure out how to fix it now.  If I can get the files out of util-linux I will manually copy them where they need to go, and see what happens.  I did find out that limited shell is a read only file system when I tried to install the rpm.  Reinstall is easy, I can do that anytime.

(Update) Edit:  Duh, I feel so stupid.  I managed to get the files out of util-linux using alien and converting it to a tgz file.  Nice little utility.  Still got an error that the UUID for /hda9 was not recognized and dropped to limited shell, luckily when I used vim to remove hda9 from my fstab file I did not get a read only file system error this time.  Rebooted up fine, new kernel and new tools seem to be working fine, but I have not tried mounting my ext4 partition yet.  That will have to wait till this evening, but I'm way happy!  Progress!

I got ext4, without a reinstall!  Thx Tex!

One issue, when I copied a bunch of stuff from my /home to my ext4 /data my desktop nearly locked up completely until it was finished.

Gonna try this:
kernel.sysrq=1
vm.swappiness=1
vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50

From here:
http://www.pclosmag.com/html/Issues/200711/page08.html

and reboot.  Will report back if it helps.

Nope, system still pretty much locks up when copying files.  Will try to research it, but it's probably over my head.  Anyway, ext4 is working so Happy Happy Happy Camper.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a sec. Stop the bus. There goes the "it'll be ready when it's ready" motto that has been floating and floating and floating (now waterlogged) around the forum. Does anyone else see what I see? Tex, you just let the cat out of the bag.
We now have an official timeline. Okay, not an official timeline but an official due date? No.. More of a countdown, maybe.
According to what I am reading here PCLinuxOS KDE4 will be released on or before December 31, 2009!
And not only do we now know for certain that it will be released before 2010 but also that it will have Ext4 support.
This is big news for all those disheartened by the crappy implementations of KDE4 out there. All those pondering going back to Gnome or even worse giving the new evil incarnation Windoze 7 a try.
I've tried every KDE4 distro out there including Arch/Chakra (which does have a lot of promise for the future) and Pardus which is great but they forgot to add packages to their repositories Huh when they made their excellent KDE4 distro. And nothing fits including Mandriva and I can't even explain why because Mandy works damned fine (excuse my French) and has all the same apps, pretty much.
Tex you've just got the Midas touch. Thanks a million. (Please, no retractions Smiley)

4evergr8ful,
2009.3 is to be the next quarterly update CD, as 2009.2 was a quarterly update CD. Yes it will have ext4 support. It will have kde-3.5. There is a possibility of a kde4 version, but that is not a certainty.
The plan to have a kde4 release ready before the end of the year does not negate the "it's ready when it's ready" standard. Any planned release is always contingent on its being ready.

Okay, sounds great either way. I'm looking forward to Ext4 far more than KDE4.
At least now I know how to get a question answered around here  Wink.
It's also good to know that PCLOS has no intention of abandoning a perfectly good, stable desktop. Why other KDE distros have abandoned KDE3 I have no idea. I think they've hurt Linux as a whole in doing so. To quote a comment to a blog, "The distributions that dropped version 3.5 providing version 4.x only, should also be criticized sharply, even more so than KDE itself - they withdrew a perfectly good product and replaced it with a half baked one which is far inferior than previous version."
The rest is here for anyone interested.. http://blogs.computerworld.com/what_do_kde_4_2_and_windows_7_have_in_common#comment-130711
The blog that the comment came from is worth a read as well.

+1

I tried the KDE4 via VirtualBox and all I can say is a) big deal and b) don't really like the metaphore change.
