Sure am glad I came across this thread explaining editing fstab to fix the USB issue in latest virtualbox. Prior to that I could only get the guest OS to see it by running virtualbox as root, hardly a secure solution.

Greetings,

just today I was starting to play with virtualbox again, and downloaded the getvirtualbox app to a fresh install on an xp box.

I wanted to ghost the xp image of the machine to a virtualbox xp home machine I setup using parnote's Oct 2008 magazine guide.

I have the ghost image on a usb key, and as my lot in life, usb and virtual machines do not work for me.

The usb key shows up, but is greyed out.

Previous to this install, I tried group settings, but that may have been before the getvirtualbox app was in synaptic, months ago.

Will the above threads in this post get me going ok? I was about to post, but my search got me here first.

I am not at the machine as I am dealing with getting wifi going in a new laptop, so will check tomorrow here.

Thanks!

If your USB device is not accessible it may that the host OS has mounted it - taken control of it - and so the guest OS may not have access.

One of the first things I tried was mounting and unmounting it on the 2010 part of the image, you know, with the mouse uncaptured.

And various permutations of starting VB before after inserting key, rebooting, etc.
