Not sure what she did but her PCL was running just fine until yesterday, then she could only log in as root, neither user could log in. So we ran xorgconfig and now it is broke, goes to login screen and startx just errors out. Is there any easy way to rectify over the phone? The error mentioned a full tmp file somewhere, and I really need some hanholding at the command line.

Hi there! Here is something I am always doing when I will loose my xserver.

1st method is to start system in console mode then log in as root, type in video, hit enter, follow the wizard, reboot Smiley should do it.

2nd method if the first one fails - restart your pc and put the cd with live linux version into the cd tray. You were able to install it before so i assume youre pc is setup to boot from cd if not do so. Once the live pclos is booted up log in as root, clik on the konqueror and in the address bar type in "/" without the "" and press enter. You should now have icons in the window below bin boot dev and so on. Click on etc this will get you inside this folder. Find folder X11 and click on it. Now in address bar you should have /etc/X11. Find file xorg.conf. Then right click on it. Pick copy from drop down menu. Then in address bar type / again and press enter. Find folder called mnt and click on it. You should now have a list of the folders below, hda1, hda5, hda6 and so on. Clik on the one that you have chosen to be your / partition during the previous install. I suppose it will be hda1. Click on it.

Then you should see a list of folders bin boot dev and so on. Find etc click on it, then find X11 click on it. You should now have /mnt/hda1/etc/X11 in your address bar. Right click on the blank space in X11 folder and choose paste from dropdown menu. When it will ask what do you want to do choose overwrite. And then reboot and see will the x start for you.

And if you use second method after rebooting and logging in go to konsole type in pcc and press enter. Type in roots password go to hardware and setup graphical server. TEST IT before accepting (color vertical stripes looking nice are good), log off, log back in and you are sorted.

Andy

P.S. # 1 I am not an expert. but this should  help.

P.S. # 2

Nice post, I don't think I can get this done over the phone so a trip to sister's is in order. Report back when I can. I'll try the video in the morning, pcc from command line  opened fine but would not do anything.

oh, and if you can't log in. It's most likely that you have run out of space. Check the main partion and the home partition.
you can use   df   in the terminal if you want.

Good one Ice!

You can clean up your files from the live cd while there!

Sure she's not up yet so I haven't tried yet, googling around I saw several references about disk space and tmp files. Hers is a 160g disk drive, so it is not out of space. However the / partition is whatever PCL made it. I figured out on my machine after the last update to k3b it kept erroring out on movie files until I made a new folder on the home partition for its temp file. Can I just empty out the /tmp file or do I have to be more selective and how can I prevent it from filling or auto cleaning for a clueless newbie, she's only got about two months on PCL but lives in winblows world. I did get her over the phone to install virtualbox and she installed XP all by herself. Somehow trying to copy pictures over to xp  "X" went haywire. That's all I can get out of her.

Once you will get x's working can you connect remotely and fix the login issue? Does she has a public IP? If yes this may help a big time. Brand new, it was only written yesterday Smiley.

WOWWWW absolutely great post, never got remote to work, gonna be my goal to figure out. After several tries finally got PCLlive 2007 booted. Took several tries because PCL couldn't make the Gateway monitor stop erroring out-same one I originally installed several months ago.But with an older LG monitor she had we finally got a live install. After she gets all her pictures backed up we are just going to reinstall.  PCC and video couldn't find the monitor or video card so something is not worth trying to fix. After we get up and running I'll try to connect. We are both on Comcast behind linksys routers, is that an issue or not?
Been a great post for me,thanks everyone. Grin
Sure hope this whole exercise isn't because of a bad monitor :'(
Should this be marked solved?

Glad you are up and running even if just to back up and reinstall.

Yes. Go to your first post in this thread, click modify, add [SOLVED] to the subject Smiley

Before reinstalling, why not clear the temp file like you said.  That is most likely the issue at hand.

Love to, but X will not recover so it would be pointless for me describe how to that over the phone. Besides this will be her first linux install by herself, the learning curve continues......
