The
March Forum Foibles will feature some limericks. I invite members of the forum to contribute to the fun.
Here is a bit of limerick history gathered from different sources. I don't know how accurate, but it will do for our purpose.
The word derives from the Irish town of Limerick. Apparently a pub song or tavern chorus based on the refrain "Will you come up to Limerick?" where, of course, such bawdy songs or 'Limericks' were sung.
Limericks consist of five lines.
Lines 1, 2, and 5 of Limericks have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another.
Lines 3 and 4 of Limericks have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.
Limericks are meant to be funny. They often contain hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, puns, and other figurative devices. The last line of a good limerick contains the PUNCH LINE or "heart of the joke."
The rhythm is just as important in a limerick as the rhyme. Reading aloud helps get the rhythm.
Don't be scared off by the details. No one will be counting your syllables, checking your rhythm or your punch lines. We are just looking for some fun.
What should your limerick be about? Well, about anything....but not too bawdy. It has to pass inspection from the Editor-in-Chief. He's a bit prudish you know.

Forum members, forum procedures, computer stuff in general might be a good place to begin. Of course the easiest one to write would be about yourself. (Best to do it before somebody else does it for you.

)
I will be posting a few of my entries during the next few weeks to get us started.
