Hi! Aren't you really glad you use PCLOS?  I know I am.
Recently most of us updated to 2009.  I did.  Did you?

You may wonder why I am posting this and asking you these questions.  Huh

I have volunteered to help the PCLOS Magazine.  It has always been one of my favorite places to get info and learn more about how to use PCLOS and other Linux distros.  I volunteered because I wanted to give back a wee bit to the community that has given so much to me and others.

Articles for the magazine are what keeps the publication going. Everyone likes to read something new about the OS.  I even enjoy reading the old things. Roll Eyes

I am inviting all members to submit an article for the June issue of the magazine.  Although I am unable to suggest a specific topic, I know many of you have ideas or tutorials that could be shared and be of use to others.  If there is anything I have learned about using Linux, it is that it is about sharing.  Smiley

Hold on!!!!

If you feel you cannot write a full article you still can help!  I myself am interested in learning about the changes or new things that came with the 2009 update.  There probably are some big big changes down deep in the system that just make for a better OS.  And there are probably some changes right on top.  Some might be very obvious and some might not be too clear cut.

What I am asking from each of you is to send me a little notice of the changes/good things that you have found from 2007-2009. You don't have to write an article about it.  Just tell me what change you have noticed and perhaps why it is good or not so good and how it might be used.

You probably have found many.  Think of the times you have been using 2009 and thought to yourself........"Hey, this is neat and so much better" or "WOW!  How did we ever get along without this!"

I and the PCLOS magazine team will write it up and share the changes in the magazine.  We want everyone (me) to be aware of new things and how to use them.  Wink

You don't have to do a thing except keep using PCLOS and make a note of one or more changes/goodthings. Be specific!  Then PM them to me. I am looking forward to hearing from you. If you don't want your name attached to the change, just tell me.  I will take the credit for finding it myself!!   Grin Grin

For those of you who are planning to write an article, please see the submission guidelines and submit to pclinuxossubmissions at gmail dot com.

The community effort that went into creating the soon to be released update-notifier might make for a good story...  ..not to mention a review of the software itself.

All 14 pages of it is documented here:

+1  it's truly a feel good story.  The initiative was from the PCLOS community.  A story worth telling, if you can get the facts.  Just the Facts Ma'am.   Grin

Localization project would be good too.   Wink

I just read a short story --- only 14 pages long. There was adventure, excitement, drama, loyalty, foreign intrigue, secret codes, commitment and cooperation, artistry and humor. But best of all there was a happy ending.  Smiley

Will the story be a best seller? Probably not.
Will there be a movie?  Sorry fellas.
Should it be required reading for all PCLOS users? Yes, I repeat YES!

As I began reading The Case of the Reluctant Updater, I wondered where it all would lead. It was just about a group of PCLOS Men hanging out trying to look nerdy. Nothing new about that plot.   Grin
But as I scrolled the pages, the strength of the characters began to emerge. The drive, the intensity, the charisma of the heroes started taking shape.  Heroes?  Yes, this story has many heroes.  And the supporting characters are magnificent.

Now perhaps some of you read the story page by page as it was written.  And perhaps some of you like me read the original title Question about a script Update-Notifier RPM and passed it up.  Never judge a book by its cover.

I urge you to go back and reread the story in one sitting.  It took me over one nail biting hour.  You will see how the drama unfolds and builds.  You will experience the disappointments and triumphs of the men struggling to discover the code.   Aaahh the code.  The horror. It resists, it defies, it holds out, it refuses to give up its secrets.  But our heroes stood firm. Nothing would get in their way. It was one for all and all for one.  Day and night someone manned the controls.

Then on May 2, 2009 at 09:20:47 AM these words were recorded:  "Well it looks like we're almost done with this."

A bit more testing, a bit of cleaning up and the code to the Updater was complete.

You ask "What is an updater and what is it for?"  I will not give away the details.  You must read about it for yourself.  And do not skip the pages and pages of code.  It will mesmerize you, leave you spellbound.  I will never look at coding in the same way again.  How it can be turned into something so beautiful and bewitching is a gift given only to a few.

Romance???  Yes romance.  One PCLOS MAN left the project temporarily to watch TV with his wife.

This is only one chapter of the on going saga of PCLOS.  There are dozens and dozens of stories that will never be told. And there are more stories of vision yet to be written.

I hope somebody who took part in this project will write it up for the magazine and tell the rest of the story.  Deadline is getting near!

For those of you who follow my little songs (and I thank you), please recall the PCLOS MEN.  I do not just make this stuff up.  My words and tunes come from real life stories like the one above.

And shame on anyone who doubts the ability of PCLOS makers to work together.

Another one of the biggest advances for PCLOS in years has been the development of the  addlocale  package.

This has been a huge undertaking and gives PCLOS what it never had previously --- the ability to work in some 72  more languages.

Maybe it is time now to dispense with the usual statement on releases and elsewhere, that PCLinux is an English language only distro.

This is truly a milestone/marker in the development of PCLOS, and my congratulations go to pinoc for all the work he has put into it and continues to do.

This new facility for PCLOS should indeed be splashed all over the magazine and elsewhere.

Tremendous!

I contacted pinoc about the new developments of the addlocale  package. He is working to include another major feature into addlocale and will write something for the magazine a bit later.  Smiley Smiley

(It seems ya'll are like we gals with our hair and makeup. It has to be just right before we enter with a big splash.)  Grin

For those of you who want to know more about it, here is the magazine article pinoc wrote about it earlier.  http://pclosmag.com/html/Issues/200807/page04.html

How about an insight to the man responsible for add-locale, pinoc? The human-side of PCLinuxOS.

While interviewing Pinoc about addlocale, ask about GetOpenOffice. It's another great app he wrote for PCLinuxOS.

The XFCE Spin? The Quarterly Update Project? The new PCLinuxOnline Blog? (Personally, I think the blog should be moved to the front page of the main PCLOS website, but that's me. Everything seems so spread out.)
